First bobcat
« on: October 02, 2014, 08:57:59 AM »
Was on my way to a spot I've been working for bears, and nature called. Pulled down an old road/ trail and as I got out of the truck, I saw what I thought was a coyote about 75 yards down the trail. As I grabbed the rifle out of the back seat and loaded it, it started to head for the woods. I gave a whistle and it stopped broadside and looked at me. Yikes, it's a bobcat! Never seen one before.

Looks like a big one!  What caliber did you smack him with?

165 grain 30-06. Not ideal, but it didn't mess her up too bad. The rifle was handed down to me last year from my Dad. It's a 1947 Model 70 that he got 40-some years ago, and was going to fix it up, but it never made it to the top of his project list. It was a goal of mine to send him a picture of the finished project on a successful hunt. I never imagined it would be a cat. Dad was thrilled! Now, to get a grouse with the old Model 11...

Nice bobcat and rifle. I wish I saw more bobcats when I am out hunting, just don't seem to spot them or call them in ever.

Um, are you certain it's a bobcat??

Feet don't look big enough for lynx.

A Bobcat is a lynx    ;)

Lynx rufus
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Looks like a lynx, hence, no spots and the spike fur at the end of the ears. But I've never seen one before so I'm not an expert.  Nice cat!
