Opening morning people everywhere did not have have a good feeling so we cut back closer to the truck. Couldn't buy a bugle. We sat down discussing our game plan, but not before 1st ripping off a bugle and a bunch of cow calls. After sitting there about 10 min we heard something up behind us. Obviously an elk. My partner slipped back while I set up, the wind was perfect! Some sweet sounding calls and a few mellow bugles had the bull bugling, and another farther up the ridge. The closer one was obviously coming in but taking his time. Some tree raking by my partner is what really sealed the deal. All of a sudden I see a white body coming through the trees so I pull up my muzzy and get ready. He's going right at my partner slightly quartering to me so I put the sight right in front of his right shoulder and squeeze, 30yds shot. he bolts off and stops 20 ft. Later and drops! Bull down! I've killed bigger but can't pass up up a legal elk in an OTC unit! While we were boning him out the other bull kept screaming so we tried an setup for my partner but the wind changed and he spooked out.
