What do you think of a shooting range like this?

The wildlife biologist that works on the district I am located at is working a detail on the Uwharrie NF.  They have an actually shooting range on the NF.   The have a range master who is a NC wildlife commision employee.  The site was partially funded by Pittman-Roberston funds. There is a cost $3 per day or a year pass for $30.  Pretty minimal cost I feel to be able to shoot on a really well put together range and has a range master.  Also cheaper that joining a gun club.  I wanted to throw this out to you all and see if you think this would be possibly in our area and how many people would be interested in something like this.

These are the only pictures that he sent me.

Looks pretty sweet! I would be for it. It could help keep the rest of the area clean and clear of all the crap people haul off to the hills to shoot. Some of the places people shoot on public ground are shameful with all of the casings and junk left laying around.

Me likes   definitely makes cleaning up after yourself a must!! Only issue I see is where they are built and how many are needed...I think 8-10 around the state would suffice for the high volume of participants

Man that thing is awfully nice.  I'd like to see a few near each of the more populated areas.  I think those would be quite a great addition to the local forests, especially if within a reasonable drive.  I like seeing P-R money spent on things like that (as opposed to wolves).
But in this state it might be difficult.  The greenies have managed to block a few proposed county ranges due to concerns about lead and how efficient the county would be at reclaiming lead from berms.  They have also been on a warpath against random shooting in the NF--saying lead washes into streams harming ESA salmon/steelhead.

As stated in another thread the CPL in this state funds a grant that happens every other year and funds up to $150K. Its based elligability is based off a points system. VERY FEW gun ranges have been applying for it, partially because they need to be open to the public. PM me and I may be able to get our old paperwork to get ya a beter idea how it worked.

Some of the basic requirements were, Have to have a lease or control of shooting range for at LEAST 10 years, SAFTEY is the big push for this grant. Im sure a new range would be a top priority.

Volunteer work is considered a controbution to the project and earns you credit tword the funds. Something like $15hr for unskilled $30Hr for a contractor with Lic plaus any equiptment/time that is donated.

It MAY need to be a non profit organisation that applies for the grant... dont remeber exactly. Perhaps this is a WFW opportunity?

Thing looks great...but would probably need surveillance cams in western WA...or the first night the tweekers would probably take the gutters, roof, handrails and trashcan...second night take the lumber...and third night leave bags of opened, stolen mail on the bare slab.

The one I used in Arkensas had open air concrete shooting benches. Dont deteriorate, hard to break, impossible to steal. There were several of these 1-200 yard ranges in each county that were self serve with about 20 lanes. I bet if you put in several of these self serve ranges with these kinds of minimal improvements focused on safety we would see a great improvement.  :twocents:

Enclosed with shooting lanes are nice but are extremely loud and are pretty bad places to take kids/ladies to introduce them to shooting especially if there is a guy in the lane next to you shooting a rifle with a comp on it.  Open air is much nicer as far as concussion and sound goes.

If you do take someone to a range like that to introduce them to shoot, try double plugging (ears and muffs).  Double plugging is good anytime but especially at enclosed ranges.

Oregon has a couple that I know of, its an awesome idea, but I agree with the concern for vandalism here in W Wa.

The sweet way to reduce noise in an enclosed /cover shooting site is to hange 4x8 sheets of plywood and staple used shag carpet to them. really cuts down on the noise and doesnt cost too much.  :twocents:

Nice, but I wouldn't want any fixed benches.
