should i get a muzzle break? pros vs cons
« on: October 05, 2014, 09:39:45 AM »
so i have a tikka t3 light 270wsm, and i love the gun to death but the only complaint i have is the kick is wierd like no other 270 i have shot and maybe its just because its a short mag but it kicks up rather than the strait backish that im use to.. if you get what im trying to explain....

anyway... i've been thinking about a muzzle break lately and i have zero experience with a muzzle break or how they act after a muzzle break is installed so whats your guys take on muzzle breaks.. pros vs cons? is it worth it? will it deafen me and anyone around when i shoot? will it make a difference?

Muzzle brakes (unless your muzzle is broken...  ;) ) are hated by people next to you at the range, or your hunting partner, but can reduce felt recoil from my experience and some seem to be designed to push the barrel down more than forward.

On your description of kicking up, is the muzzle rising more than you usually have happen with other 270's?  I'm not a gunsmithing expert but it sounds like maybe the stock is not fitting you quite right.   :dunno:

yea the muzzle is rising more than usually with any other 270, but this is the only 270wsm i have ever shot, and i dunno it seems to me the stock fits me well, same length as my old 270 and my fathers they were both rem M700 though.

The brake on my .300 win mag barrel is not bad at all when you're sitting next to the shooter. Ive sat next to it and had buddy's sitting next to it report the same thing. It all comes down to the design of the brake. Mine is a Defensive Edge D1.00 and it works great. Reduces a lot of recoil too.

Bmcox86 has a Pallazo Precision brake on his T3 lite .300 and likes it a lot. Ive not been next to him shooting it so cant comment on the muzzle blast.

I wonder if the shape of the stock is a bit different, more drop would be a guess.

The short mag has a little more juice than a standard. 270 win so it is probably going to feel a little snappier. Its also probablyna little lighter than the other rifles you're comparing it too.

If it is just muzzle flip that is the issue, you could even go with a flash suppressor.  Many are made to control flip and kind of fall in between braked and unbraked for recoil and cost.

I would think Mag-na-porting would take care of your issue.

I have a palazzo break on my tikka 300 and it tamed it down a lot. I think it was $200 even for everything. Well worth it in my opinion and I haven't noticed any more noise than usual but I have only been behind it not next to it

does sims make a recoil pad for those rifle? I would try that before a brake. a brake will require hearing protection... even for one shot. I do think brakes have a place, but not every rifle for every situation. its hard to hunt thick brush with ear plugs in.
