I have a break on my 300 win mag and I love it as long as you only shoot it with hearing protection. I keep earplugs tucked into my ammo sleeve and slip them in when I get a shot. However,  I came up on a buck unexpectedly at about 40 yards a couple years ago and didn't have time to get them in and it was terrible. Ears rang for a week. To me though...I shoot that gun so well because I do not anticipate any recoil. The target pretty much doesn't jump out of my scope and it makes a huge difference. No matter how much I tell myself I'm going to let a gun surprise me, if it has a big kick I'm much more tense and don't shoot as well. Worth it if you ask me.
GO COUGS!

I have a B.O.S.S. muzzle break on my BAR .300 win mag and HATE it!  It works great for it's intended purpose but what I hate is that it is so loud that after 2 shots I cannot hear for the rest of the day!  I'm not one to carry hearing protection into the woods and take the time to use it unless I am sitting in a spot glassing and have the time to do so.  I machined one without the holes and the noise is reduced significantly.  Unfortunately, I loaned it to a friend to try out and haven't seen it since.

Without the holes it would just be a thread protector, wouldn't it?

Hey thanks for the plug.

The standard brake was designed for rounds based on the .308/7.62 and smaller. The brake gives a LOT of down force with the magnums, so I cannot recommend it for this application.

I would recommend a Fortis RED .308 or any Defensive Edge Brake.

Fortis "Red" on my SPR.

Killer Innovations muzzle brake. They have since come out with a tapered to the rear version/option, which I like allot.

New idea, get a suppressor instead. Recoil reduction without killing the ears.

That's the best advice yet!

Did you mean weight or wait, because I'm "waiting" on three of them and the wait time is weighing heavily on my patience.;)

Find a FFL that does Efile for the Tax stamp.  People are getting them back quick when efiled.  <3mos I believe...

LOL

Great idea but the Electronic filing hasn't worked or been up and running since early this past spring.  It's been under construction and "supposedly" the Feds are reworking the e-file system and maybe it'll be back up after the first of the year.

Those new hunter town cans are supposed to be pretty budgetable.

It's called muzzle jump and happens with " magnum" rounds that shoot fast. A muzzle break is a good way to reduce this and who cares who is standing next to you. Just don't shoot prone without putting a mat down. Lol. Lots of dirt in the eyes.

I can shoot prone all day without a mat and without issue. Again. It's all in the design of the brake. Mr. Carlock put a little time into designing the perfect brake if you ask me. Folks don't complain sitting next to me. No dirt flying. I don't wear hearing protection when hunting. I don't condone that, but I don't do it and it doesn't bother me.

I might have to look into that!
What would life be without the thrill of the hunt?
