Upgrade an old scope?
« on: October 08, 2014, 11:51:13 AM »
In an attempt to consolidate calibers I traded for a Remington 700 in .308 yesterday.  It has an aftermarket fiberglass stock, 26" heavy contour ported barrel, and an older Burris 6-18x scope.  The scope is glossy, has hunting turrets, and the Burris logo is in cursive rather than the block letters they use now.  State of the art long range rig - circa 1988!!

Reticle is just a plain fine crosshair with no dots. If I am going to make use of the high end of the magnification range, it will be at long range, at which point I want either mil dots or a way to dial up elevation.  Is it practical to send an old scope like this back to the factory (assuming they will do it) and have the reticle changed and/or add target turrets?

I would put what you just asked into an email and send it directly to Burris.  Who better to answer what they can and can't offer you?

The glass and coatings have improved so much in the last 25 years I think I would get a new scope.

Old scopes aren't worth anything, not much value. You can a nice scope that will handle the 308. I have Pentax scopes on different caliber guns with zero problems at all.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Burris said they could change the reticle, but not the knobs.  Surprisingly these old Fullfields are bringing $200-$250 on ebay, so that is where it's going.

Old fullfields and Signatures actually have pretty decent optics.  If you have a range toy that needs a decent scope to shoot small groups, or need a scope for working up loads for different rifles, I wouldn't be too hasty to be rid of it.

It should have a lifetime warranty too.  Despite what you might read, I sent an OLD signature 6-24 in recently and received quick turnaround and no cost for a checkup.

Great to know about their service with your Signature.  I also got a very quick response after asking Burris if they would add custom turret or a mil dot reticle.  Said they could do the reticle, but not the turrets.  After thinking it over I felt like the 6x low end would really limit it to punching paper so I threw it on ebay and got a surprisingly good price for it.  They do seem to have a following.  Used the proceeds to fund a Nikon 2.5-10x with rangefinder and BDC reticle.  Got the low end magnification and a way to either dial or use the dots for elevation. I have a bid in for a sporter weight .260 barrel so this whole project seems to be taking a different direction...

If you buy a new scope, your marksmanship should improve. Scopes are of much better quality these days. Get a NIKON BDC nag go to their spot on ballistic program, put in your cartridge and bullet weight, it will give you exact distances to hold for including bullet drop and wind drift. If you wanna reach out and touch em, the nikon BDC scopes are a great choice.
