Canned food expiration question.
« on: October 09, 2014, 04:00:04 PM »
I was planning to use some canned food I have for a morning snack (for the dog) due to its digestibility.
However, it is older than I thought. Says best used by 2010. I assumed canned stuff was fairly non perishable?
Does this need to get thrown out or still ok? Thanks.

If it is for the dog, you are probably okay.

Depending on the dog's digestive issue, maybe give it a small portion to see how it handles it.

But if you have any doubts after opening it and looking it over, then just toss it.

From Hormel's FAQ website;

What is the shelf life of a Hormel Foods product in an unopened can?

The product is always safe to consume as long as the seal has remained intact, unbroken and securely attached. However, the flavor and freshness of the product gradually begin to decline after three years from the manufacturing date.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I should have specified canned dog food. Hoping not to have to stop on the way out tomorrow morning.
RadSav, based on that, it sounds like it should be ok. Thanks for the link and everyone's thoughts.
