My 2008 Archery Buck!
« on: December 12, 2008, 08:54:26 PM »
Had this guy come in 3 different days chasing does and never gave me a shot. On Dec 6th, he finally offered me a shot that I was comfortable with. I took the shot and connected, waited about 15mins and climbed down to find my arrow and look for blood. I found my arrow about 30yds away it had some blood, and guts! Not a good sign. I decided to give till morning to look for him.
Got up at daybreak and woke the kids up, ate a quick breakfast of instant oatmeal and headed out the door. Took my first step off the porch and just about landed flat on my arse! It appeared we had alittle drizzle over night and then ended up freezing, I know had a 1/4 inch of ice on everything. I knew this was not going to make for very good tracking. Got to where I found my arrow and some blood sign the night before and sure enough the blood had been washed away. Followed the trail another 50-60yrds and still no blood. I was pretty familiar with the area so I just decided to have the kids spread out and we started a grid search. After about 3 hours of searching the kids were getting pretty wore out. I took them home grabbed a sandwich and headed back out on my own. I felt pretty comfortable that he was not in the area we had already searched so I headed further back into the thicker timber. About another 2 hours later I found him on an old logging road.
As you can see in the picture, "and I apalogize in advance for the cell phone pic" the birds had already started in on him. They managed to get one eyeball out and started plucking some hair on the hind end. Im guessing he will score around 130.
