Treestand Location
« on: October 10, 2014, 12:15:45 PM »
I am a hunter with a terrible success rate here in WA.  I will be hunting a large clear-cut Weyerhaeuser property out near Aberdeen and have setup a tree stand about 400 yards back in the woods along a game trail.  Game cam has shown a couple deer but mostly Elk.  I am having cold feet due to the lack of pictures on the cam but am slightly optimistic that road hunters will change the patterns a bit.  I planned on trying to cut them off on the way back to their beds around 6am close to some roads, and moving to the tree stand in the afternoon with a few apples.  I was wondering if anyone had advice on tree stand locations in relation to large clear-cuts that may or may not have road hunter traffic.

The early part of the season is pretty hit or miss unless you have one patterned (treestand wise).  Most bucks tend to stay nocturnal until the last week of the season.  I do my best in the early part of the season by hunting early and late and generally moving through the brush.  Later on your treestand should be money if it is on a heavily traveled game trail.  One thing to make note of is every doe you see this season in your hunting area.   These does will be where the bucks are heading at the end of the month.     Beyond that just keep trying until you find what works for you.

I grew up in Aberdeen, moved to Spokane back in 02. Neways clear cuts are great but your action is only going to be in the last hour maybe hour and a half of shooting light. You may get a running buck throughout the day jumped by a road hunter.. Stay in the stand  and wait til dusk.. You'll see your buck. I heard the mill was charging for permits this year.. Is this true?
