Westside/Blacktail planting mix?
« on: October 11, 2014, 02:26:49 PM »
Hi all,

My parents own a place up route 2 west of Steven's Pass in the neighborhood of Index. It abuts some pretty nice woods, but the deer are pretty slim up the valley that high. Used to be more, but I think past winters have slimmed them down pretty severely. They have about 10 acres, mostly open fields.

I'm wondering about an easy-to-plant (ie scatterable, ideally) plant of some type that I could put up there that would help out with deer attraction/growth. I'm less looking to intensively manage a food plot (a la eastern whitetail hunters) than I am to do something positive for the deer population in the neighborhood, with the possible added bonus of bringing a few more around their property specifically.

Any ideas?

Red and white clover and blackberries.  They LOVE blackberries which is why it is tough to get them to come to a food plot.  I have a section of one of my pastures that is planted heavily in several types of clover for my cows with spring calves.  The deer love it through spring and summer but leave it alone during the fall when the shorter varieties of clover are all that are left.

alfalfa is another good one. Almost any fruit or nut tree works for them too.
