Toutle wolf

Saw a wolf yesterday in the Toutle unit. First reaction was that it was a coyote. Then realized it was way too tall and long legged for a coyote. Long white legs and light gray body.

Not surprised but all you will hear from the WDFW is that you were mistaken it was a coyote or a hybrid.

Been wolves in there for a while now, nice that the state does things without informing the public

I was on the 1430rd, way up high, southwest side of the top. I'm not really surprised. I always figured as big and undeveloped as that whole area is that they were never all shot out. I have heard many anecdotal stories in hunting camp south of Packwood about "really big coyotes being shot on occasion. I just didn't think I would see one as plain as I saw this one. There was no mistaking, it didn't even resemble a coyote.

If there just big coyotes guess there's no problem with shooting them then

Had a nice long talk with the WDFW today. Apparently they got a report two weeks of a wolf on the 1440 rd. With two reports they are planning on sending a biologist up to check out the area. I was told they also had two pretty solid sightings out of the Cispus area.

I know My story is a bit late to this thread. Anyway, I hope you get to read it. I'm not much of an internet guy and just googled "Toutle Couger" and found this post. I signed up so I could confirm your sighting.
     My daughter an I were hunting in that same area about the same time as you were and also saw a wolf. We had decided to break for lunch and were making our way back up hill to my truck when my daughter asked "do you hear that?" I asked her to explain. She said that it sounded like we were being paced by something. We stood still and listened but heard nothing more. We quietly started to move again and imediatly she says "that, you don't hear that?" okay, now she's got my attention so I held still and followed her gaze and tried to tune my 51 year old ears in on that direction. All I'm hearing is my heart beating. Suddenly this wolf ran with its nose to the ground and stopped, still sniffing the ground directly where we had just crossed a creek. We froze. The wolf didn't appear to notice us at all. I don't beleave it even saw us. We stood about 10 yards to its right side, drew up and prepared to take aim. The wolf turned to its left nose to the ground and quickly tracked the course we had just come from on the opposite side of the creek. This all happened in the matter of a few seconds. I have never seen a coyote bigger than my dog. This wasn't a coyote. While we had our lunch my daughter says  "I thought you said we don't have wolves in this area." I said "that was yesterday, today we do." I live near Ariel WA. not far from where this took place and have set up some trail cameras. No wolves yet, just a big Tom. For a while we tried some calls in the evenings with no luck. Anyway thanks to this wolf I'm pretty confident I'll be mounting a cougar this year!  So. Anyway, beware of the moon and stick to the roads! Thar be wolves in them hills.

Weird. They didn't just tell you that it was a coyote.

I mentioned on here back in 2009 about a couple of our crew members seeing a wolf off the 1500 line.

Ask the BIO you talked to, for the report of the said wolves, from the WDFW. It's public property..so, DEMAND it.
