first blacktail interaction
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:36:12 AM »
spent the day yesterday out searching for a blacktail buck. i made my way out to a hillside overlooking a 7-8yr old clearcut and  glassed for a few hours. at some point i look over to my right where the cut meets the timberline ( if that makes sense) and i notice a rock , but then it moves. i put the binos up and sure enough its a buck and a good one at that. i couldent count points, they were obscured by brush. i put the binos down and look out and the deer is just out of the range of my 30-30 ( he was out about 300-350 yards) so i never got a shot off .  i spent the rest of the day looking for another buck to no avail. ended up walking out with a garbage bag full of shoutgun shells that some slobs left behind.  ill be back at it in a few days when i get some time off of work.
i guess i must be making some progress as i actually got a glimpse of one of those grey ghosts.

I couldn't find any way to get towards him from the cut side without making a racket, but did try to circle around from the timber side. the only thing i think i succeed in wad pushing him further away trying to make my way through a vine maple jungle. gotta work on my stealth skills

sometimes and i dont know what situation you were in but sometimes its better to sound like a heard of elk, even big ole bucks are real curious as to whats making all that noise, only thing is you gotta be quick on decision making and quick with the gun  good luck

Just remember that location and hit him up again.  If you didn't spook him he will be back. This blustery weather tends to send the bucks to the edges of timber.   Also, the later we go into the month he dumber he will get with the rut coming on.   :twocents:  Don"t give up on him!!
