A light, short rifle.

As in 22" bbl, 7lbs gross weight.

I am tempted to add the 30-30 to my collection as an option, however.

Nice.  Buckshot in the neck sure sucks for a deer.

First blacktail, first deer for that matter.  Shot him last year at 38 yards, around 8:30, on flat land in a clear cut.

We scouted the area for two days, saw trails and poop everywhere, so this made for day three.

I setup along these clear cuts that bordered a swamp.  Specifically, I setup in a bottleneck that connected two large clear cuts, bottlenecked between the swamp and a road.  Hence the 38 yard boom.

Figured if they were moving through, then they would come through this bottleneck and avoid the road/open area.

I heard some swoosh swoosh through the ferns, saw 4-5 does and this guy in the hauling tail through the cut.  They went behind a log, out of sight, dashed under the log and came out in plain view.  The does came out first, so I setup my gun and waited.  Soon as the buck came out I let out a "maaaa" and he stopped and looked right at me, broadside.

Boom! Dropped right there.  Boned out 70-80 lbs of meat.
very nice bud

Here is one of my biggest to date. I spent about 5 years hunting this area and scouting in the summer. Had a few bucks like this on film from summer scouting trips, but they always seemed to disappear when the season rolled around. I stuck with it, knowing the genetics were there.
I hope when I die my wife doesn't sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

Minutes before dark about 20 degrees, 5 inches of snow and a mile and a half in from the main road, he was following some does through a thick clear cut, he switched trails started headin straight towards me but I couldn't see him all that well, didn't want to gut shoot him so I thought I see how far he was gonna head at me till I got a chance. well he trotted his way 6 feet in front of me, popped his head around this small fir and stopped dead in his tracks, he went down. Most exciting hunt I've had and I'm sure it will be hard to beat.
You know he's there, You'll figure him out
