My late buck blacktail from 2012. He was the only deer I saw after hunting two days and I was lucky enough to harvest him on the second evening!

Rain, Rain, Rain, hunt in the rain midmorning, Can't remember when I was not succesfull, this year as usual I used my 35 Remington Gamemaster with the original 4x weaver scope that my dad bought me 54 years ago for my birthday, I finally had to adjust it for the only time 3 years ago, head shot at 70 yards on the edge of a clearcut on the Olympic Pnninsula and the fat Fork is in the Freezer...THANKYATHANKYAVERYMUCH!!!

Turner that head mount is sweet. I have looked at your albums and you have lots of good bucks. Whats your tactics?
I really don't have any special tactics to add, that haven't been said by some of the other guys. I think the one thing that I'm pretty good at, is "patience". I love hunting blacktails. So it's not that hard for me to pass on smaller bucks. I could tag out pretty quick, if I really wanted to, but then the season would be over sooner. I rarely see the mature bucks until the last week of October. I try to take that week off every year.
I try to get out at least 3 miles from the pavement. Where I live, that usually means about 1-2 miles of very steep riding, or pushing my mountain bike. I start putting cameras out 1st part of july. I don't check them for at least a month, usually when I'm out bear hunting in August. I'm mainly scouting for deer while bear hunting. Once I find the spots I want to hunt, I usually don't go anywhere else. I try to figure out all the main trails they use, and all the beds they have. I hunt all ages of clear cuts also. Early in the morning brand new cuts that have a lot of very young green plants are very good. especially this last week of October. That's where the does are eating at night, and the bucks will be there also. That's where I shot the 2011 buck. Most the time I'm on a 3-5 year old cut. They will actually stay in that all day, if your not detected.
When I go out, depending on what kind of spot I'm hunting, I try to be there an hour before daylight, or better. Some spots you have to wait till you can see, because I'd be spooking them out in the dark without ever seeing them. I usually use a tree stand for the flat areas. Once I get into my tree stand, or high point over the clear cut, I start glassing until I find a doe. Once I've done that I feel like I have my eyes focused for seeing deer.  (Same tactic I use for morel mushrooms. Once I find one they all start appearing  :chuckle: )Then I watch the does. Most of the time they will let you know if there's a buck around. If I have deer to watch, I'll do that all day long until it's dark again. That's where my "PATIENCE" comes in handy. Eventually, on the last week "especially", bucks will sniff around the does. The closer you get to Halloween the better it gets.
Last year I didn't get anything, I was fogged in most of the time..... It's been a long 2 years :chuckle:
I can't really think of anything else right now. Good luck!

Got this guy today after I jumped him. He boiled off into the bottom of the draw and I got up and around and snuck in on him hunkered down hiding, waiting for me to leave. I waited a couple minutes for him to move out from behind a some brush and when he did, I let him have it. Pretty cool hunt.

Three mature bucks were killed last night in our group, and one in the morning. I got one that had some ground shrinkage. These next three days will be deadly
