270 WSM / 7MM WSM / 300 WSM????
« on: October 16, 2014, 09:29:31 PM »
Thinking about getting a new WSM for hunting.  I am trying to decide on which model to go for.  I would like to just use one rifle for everything.  270 / 7MM / 300 wsm????  Any specialties over one from the next besides the obvious bull size and grain difference.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

If I was buying a new big game rifle for myself, I would go with the 300WSM.  I dropped my moose at 300+ yards with my guide's gun, did a number on him.     I like the .30 cals

I literally just went through this dilemma two weeks ago. Went with the 270 wsm, no particular reason why. Picked up a tikka stainless t3 and it shoots like a dream

If you chose the right bullet for each species I think all three can be good "Do Everything" cartridges.  But if you want one you can build a single load, dial her in and forget about it...300 would be my choice.

I went the two extremes and got the 270 and the 325.  That way I run light body animals in one gun and large body animals with the other.  Giving me the choice of either one I feel lucky with for muledeer and bear.  Been happy as all heck working it that way.  Would be even happier if Nosler would make some more 8mm Accubonds some time before I turn 80 >:(

My 270 WSM works great on deer and elk.  Im a huge fan of this caliber.  It will put down any Washington big game animal without a problem.  That said, so will the other calibers, but this "lesser" caliber will get the job done.

7WSM, especially if you reload. A 160 at 3000+ = dead anything

I think all of Win"s and Rem"s short and "super shorts" will fall by the wayside, excepting the 300 and the 8mm short win mags.   .308 bullets give lots o options. Rifle wise, im a winchester ruger guy. But get what you like.

270WSM sales are miles ahead of the 8mm.  Especially since no one is willing to ship a dang bullet for the 8mm besides Barnes. Darn shame as it really is a great round!   Don't think anyone has to worry about the 270 or the 300 going away any time soon.  The others will probably be about like a floating turd...always circling the drain but never going down :chuckle:

In my opinion, I think the 30 cal is a better all around caliber if you are going to go after elk, moose and big bears. I'd load a premium 180g bullet on it and go hunt anything.
I personally love the 7mms and have no problem taking them anywhere hunting anything with them with the proper bullet selected. I recently killed a Canadian moose with a 7mm SAUM and Noslers 160 accubond. The first shot broke the on side shoulder and was found lodged under the skin at the neck/shoulder junction on the far side. The bull was going no where but I put a couple more shots into him for good measure. I've used this same bullet, load, caliber from 75 lb chamois to said moose with the same results.

The 7wsm will soon be like the Dodo bird.  There is nothing wrong with either of the other two choices.  Lots of factory stuff, and lots of components for both if you reload.
Recoil-wise there isn't much difference on an average hunting weight rifle.
Good Luck!  Let us know what you choose.

How about considering the 7mm/300 WSM

The 7wsm will soon be like the Dodo bird.

Only if people buy into stuff like that and stop buying them. If they sell and ammo goes off the shelves it will stay and get stronger.
