Idaho hunt
« on: October 18, 2014, 08:42:22 AM »
No elk for me in Idaho this year, but I did fill my reg deer tag with this nice whitetail. I'll be going back for the rut with my whitetail tag to see if I can get the even bigger buck that was with this one. He was also a little wiser than this guy which is why he will probably be available during the rut.

Elk hunting was slow, and the few we saw that were harvested were taken very high. We committed to a lower area that has produced in the past, but the elk weren't there this year. Still had a great trip.

Nice job on the buck we managed to get two bulls down there out of the five of us. The elk were very few and far between. Got one of the bulls opening morning he was a herd bull pushing around about 30 cows and he didn't like hearing the bugle of another bull/human he rounded up his cows but didn't quite escape in time and found the lead end of a bullet from my nephews 270.  We started way up on top but ended up packing him out of a hole way down in the bottom of Kelly then two days later I notched my tag on a smaller 5 point way up on top in Anderson towards coffee can. Was actually pretty amazed by how many people we saw up there. I think we passed you on our way in to set up camp but didn't see your rig the rest of the trip.

We were about a mile up past the Y above the ranch. I only saw a couple elk and one was a nice bull over in 19A where my tag wasn't any good. We went up Carey Cr. to Marshal Mt. one day to see if we could find a nice mule deer. That is quite a trip up the old miners' trail. The only mule deer buck we saw that day had ribbons tied to his antlers. He was rescued as a fawn and then turned over to a fellow with a ranch along the salmon. Would have been hard to shoot him as he rubbed up against me like a puppy.

I miss hunting Idaho - or hunting anything/anywhere right now  :chuckle:

Hopefully nobody takes a shot at that tame buck. I like to hunt game, not pets.

I didn't get an elk either...I saw a few, just couldn't close the deal. I did get a small buck though. It doesn't look like I am going to make it back over there this year...
