winthrop double doe tags
« on: October 12, 2014, 02:46:57 PM »
So I took my daughter to hunt above the state park.she has a youth tag and second deer tag.opening morning we got on three but no clear shot due to hunters walking between us at fifty yards.about an hour later I spotted a huge buck stopped counting points and got her linned up on the sticks.....wouldn't ya know it a hunter standing thirty yards from the buck the buck basically belly crawled right by him back into the brush into what I asumed to be his tunnel never to be seen again all we could do was laugh.now this morning knowing we had little time we drove the road to ramsey cr.on the way up we spotted a doe about 300 yds at a dead run my daughter jumps out throws abullet in and pauses a couple minutes and she's now about 125 going staight across yhe hill light her tail was on fire no orange is sight I said go for it .one shot just above her shoulder I watched the dust fly and she was gone.after checking for an hour for blood clean miss.can't wait to go back.

Jason,

I'm unfamiliar with this area as I have only been hunting here in Washington for a few years and previously I've been hunting near Cle Elum. My wife and I were planning a trip to Winthrop anyways (Babymoon type deal, baby due next month) and I thought I could maybe sneak out for a few hours Saturday and Sunday morning.

Anyways, can you give me some tips on areas that are worth trying. I'd like to stay away from people as most of the fun for me is in just being out and seeing a ton of people tends to ruin that for me. It looks like Forest Service road NF-37 just North of Winthrop could lead to some interesting country. I guess that is what I'm going to try if I don't get any other, better leads.

Thanks and good luck with your hunt!

JS is talking about the WDFW grounds that border the state park on the North side of the state park of Perrigan lake (Im 99% certain). Its the deers winter range and a great place to whack a whitetail deer.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

From what I heard and seen on HWY 20 which passes my house I have not seen a single rack on the back of any trucks ..usually I see a few ..But so far we have seen none .. I have friends hunting over there right now and they always kill deer but so far only 2 have shot bucks ..One was a nice 28 in. 4x4 and one decent 3x3 and a bear ...my wife and I may run over to Twisp Thursday ..

Thanks so much for the insight fellas. We're staying in Winthrop right off of HWY 20, so I was planning on trying Pearrygin (North of 20), but it sounds like heading down to Twisp and out on Poormans or Twisp River roads could be a better bet.

Heading west on either of those roads from Twisp would put me in 242 Alta, correct?

Just got home from there, it's no better. 3 days hiking and I heard 3 shots the entire time, not usually the case.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

I am happy to know there will be two more does left out there Jason, I am not happy about the circumstances and wish it was different.  I'd love to see her get her deer.    The status of the herd is in really bad shape and I think folks are starting to figure that out.  I am hearing from a lot of seasoned vets the same thing so I don't think its just me.  Phool included in that.

Yes, and if you're on a Twisp a River road, Alta is on the left and Gardner on the right.

Just wanted to send a HUGE thanks to everyone that gave me even the littlest bits of help with my short weekend hunt in Winthrop.

I only hunted on Sunday, but Saturday evening when we got into town I spent a bit of time scouting the Twisp River Rd area. I stopped a couple of guys that were leaving the Little Bridge Creek Rd and asked them if they could offer any advice. They gave some great tips and direction. Sunday morning I was on a pair of does and a pair of fawns by 8am. I stalked them for a while hoping to see a 3 point or better show up. Never happened but it was great just to get on some animals and get a bit of rush. I only saw one other person while I was out (granted it was closing day).

On my way out a hunter had taken a doe and said there was a 4 point with the herd he saw. I hunted the area he pointed me in for an hour or so but had to get going. I did find a 3 point shed on my way out of that area, so maybe there is a big 5 point waiting in there for me next year!

Again, thanks. I am planning to go back to the area for a much longer stay next year.
