2014 Muzzy Cow
« on: October 19, 2014, 03:59:39 PM »
Was just out for a legal animal this year. Hunting battleground unit, either sex. I had been on the same group for a couple days with my hunting buddies and my stepson. One of my buddies missed the 4 point bull in the group. After they all had to leave for school and work I caught up on some tracks of another group going a different direction. I knew this group had several spikes and a 3X4 but i was not going to pass up a clear shot. Logging had my area stirred up a little bit and it was a struggle to catch the elk on the this strip of public ground between private. Got on this group at daylight and finally got a clean broadside shot at this cow around 2 o'clock. The benefit of them logging on that system of dead end roads, they let me drive past the gates to get her out. 30-40 yard shot. Took out both shoulders and she still went 100-120 yards before she took a faceplant into the vine maple.

Oh, and the hole that seems to go right into her stomch in the picture was a second shot. When I came up on her she was still kicking some, and her head was burried in that vine maple so I went to put that second shot right behind her shoulder through the boiler room, but she bucked up right as I squeezed it off, so it went through the stomach (still angled through her lungs enough to put her down, but not till after it poked a nasty hole through the stomach) was kicking myself for that one in the 80 degree weather.

Hornady Great Plains Bullets 385 grain. 90 grains 777 FFFG. I had tried the No Excuses in the off season and really wanted them to work but my gun just wouldnt shoot them worth a darn. So I had a box of Great Plains Bullets I had wanted to try last year so I tried them and they shot pretty good, so thats what I went with. Was quite pleased about the penetration they had on this cow.
