I'm looking to get a GPS I'm thinking either garmin Montana or Oregon I really don't want to spend the money on a Montana but I also don't want to buy the oregon and think man I wish I'd've bought the Montana. Any input?!

I picked up the Montana last year and love it. Truth be told and if I was quizzed, I wouldn't be able to provide a clear competitive analysis between the two but so far, so good!

To be honest...
After the the thread about the HuntWa member getting lost and his thoughtful response....maybe I should just get one instead of being so proud of my natural man-skills of not getting lost....before I get lost!
Any suggestions would be cool, I know nothing.

I love my garmin. It is a little one but takes the sd card so I bought the hunt WA map with landowner mames and GMU's. Really cool.

I run Rhinos, 110,130 and 650.
But if you do not want the peer to peer positioning i would just get a regular Garmin GPS.

It's hard to beat the 62s at $199. I've used many of the Garmin models over the years, and currently use the 62 series and the Rino 650s. I prefer the usability of the 62s over the Rinos but if you have another partner with a Rino, it's nice to be able to communicate. If not, save the money and get a 62s.

Do you have a smart phone? There are a bunch of apps that will allow you to download maps before you head out so that you can use your phone like a GPS. Not as perfect as having the GPS, but I've been using this method for the last couple years and it's worked great for me. I'm on an android phone and I use an app called Back Country Navigator. It's only ten bucks.

I have an Oregon as well as the free app for RMEF members and a couple of others on the iPhone. I use both, but the Garmin more.
I haven't found any reason to spend the extra money on the Montana.

Get a Rino. 500 or 600 series. You'll spend more money but if your buddy has one, you show up on his map and visa versa. If he doesn't have one, he'll want one after you get yours. If you're hurt and someone on the S&R team has one, they'll come right to you. Rinos rock.

I have a Garmin Etrex 30. Works fine if you want one without all the fancy stuff.
I notice nobody has a PLB, a personal locater beacon. In my mind, the very best way to get rescued from a bad situation. $250

I carry the etrex 30 as well... I upgraded the maps, and have the land owner chip for it... It works great for me!
