AR10 for hunting?
« on: October 23, 2014, 05:13:21 PM »
Anyone use an AR10 .308 for hunting?  My dad is thinking of getting one.  He has an AR15 already (.223), but wants something he could use on deer or elk possibly.

Personally I don't think it seems like a practical hunting rifle and not even sure if it is totally legal.  Though as long as use the right mag and ammo, I guess it would be fine.   :dunno:

Also, any tips on what to get or avoid? Where to look? He's not too internet savvy, so I'll likely be helping him research and find the right gun if he decides to take the plunge...

If pops wants to spend the money, you can get AR's in all sorts of calibers. 300 mag, 243, 458 SOCOM. There's an outfit in Montana called NEMO. I believe and they make a 300 mag if I remember right. Big $$$$.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Don't know why it wouldnt' be just becuause it looks like an assault weapon doesn't mean it has to be used as such.
I used a mac 90 on deer once just like a 30-06 or anyother semiauto.
.308 mag as you say would be good for both put a scope on it and let him enjoy.
no regulations against using a semiauto just have to be bigger than .24 caliber.
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter

What do you mean by the bolded part?  If you are talking about magazine capacity, there is no limit in Washington.

The wife and I both hunt with an AR 15. Mine is a .25 WSSM and her is a 6.8 SPC

Dropped my deer on Sunday with a single shot to the neck from about 150 yards  :bfg:

I'm using a 6.5 Grendel and my wife is shooting a 6.8 this year

The AR15 is lighter, and I prefer it over the AR10.

Jay what ammo are you using for the Grendel? For deer I'm throwing 123 SST under 28.3 of 8208

I shoot a KEL-TEC RFB in .308 -  it has taken a bear and an elk.

If I told you the truth I would be drawn and quartered.

I can say the 6.8 ARP barrel shoots the 110 Accubonds really well :chuckle:

I have killed a couple of bucks and this year I killed a pretty good bull moose with an AR10, .308. In fact I am drying out the old girl right now from todays downpour :)

If the AR is set up right, they make a pretty dang good hunting rig....

Jay is right.  The AR-10 and the .308 are legal, but the AR-10 is a heavy gun.  The AR-15 in 6.8 SPC is plenty for deer-sized game.  I have a 6.8 SPC, and recently got a 6.8 SPC necked down to 6 mm (.243) also legal for deer-sized game, and is a flat-shooting SOB!  There is no magazine limitation in Washington and you can use a 30-round mag if you want.  ( I don't, personally-- too heavy...)  :twocents:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I hunt with my 308 DPMS AR10, but it is heavy,
. I also have a 6.8 but I really didn't check it out. The 6.8 makes the 243 look like a power house. Its probably a weak woman's gun. I saw were DPMS has come with a GII model, they lighened it up to 6 1/2 lbs. I'd like to get one.
