Why a Scout scope???

I have a 45/70 guide gun that I'm setting up with a scope and I'm looking at a 1.5-5 Leupold VX3 or a similar sized solid power scout scope.

Are there any advantages of the scout scope? Gun has an 18.5" barrel.

Quick acquisition with both eyes open.  Long eye relief.  I believe the idea is you can acquire a close target quicker.  Not as ideal for long shots.  Some like it for moving targets.

I just put a Leupold FX II IER 2.5X28 on my guide gun. I used the XS sight systems base with the ghost ring sight and Leupold low quick detachable rings. I really like it.

They work well on big bores because your range is generally limited and they prevent "scope eye". 

Keep in mind that you can't get around physics and when you put the scope out 8-10" your field of view suffers a lot, especially at higher magnifications.  You almost have to shoot them both eyes open.

My Dad recently gave me a 1965 Remington 600 in .308 which was the basis for Copper's original scout rifle.  After finding a vintage Leupold Detacho scout base and rings, I put this scope on it:

I bought it for the low end of 1.5x.  Most scout scopes start at 2x or 2.5x.  It is a little bigger than I would like but other than that it's a great scope.

If you can shoot a conventional scope with both eyes open then a scout scope won't be any faster.

I'm testing one out now. The older model Burris 2-7 Handgun scope I had on a Ruger Frontier worked pretty well, this new one though is giving me fits. Takes much longer to get lined up but I still have some adjusting to do with it so we'll see if the problems shake out or not.

This is the one I'm looking at. Also thinking of getting the rifle bead blasted so it takes the stainless barrel down to a matte stainless. Ported barrel, oversized lever loop, and a black synthetic stock. Gun should be done
