Wind aided duck decoys

Depending if there is suppose to be wind. if there is wind which here in the valley is almost everyday so far i would bring them both. it never hurts to have them in your vehicle or in the blind. if wind picks up put them out. if not you will still have the pull string.

 If there's enough wind to spin the wings of your "winducks" then you won't need a jerk string to make ripples. If its dead calm, naturally the jerk string will aid your spread better. I'd bring both and use what the conditions call for.

I make my own wind ducks, it just takes a popcorn fart to make them work. I have posted them working on this site in the past. Takes about an hour to make them and I make my own jerk string sets as well.

OK here goes;
From a hobby shop get two 8 or 9 inch X 18 pitch model airplane propellers and a 3/16th or ¼ inch stainless steel axel rod, they come in 6, 8, 10 and 12 inches get the one that will fit your decoy. Then go to a good hardware store like Ace and get two each stamped flat nuts (optional) , nylon spacers and push on cap nuts while at Ace also pickup one 2-3 inch ¼ bolt and nut and one of them green vinyl covered garden stakes and a can of flat black spray paint.  Now go out and find a Vote No on I-495 sign (any will do) for the wings.
Directions, cut the keel off a cheap decoy and add a 3”x3” access area on the bottom and drill a 3/16 or ¼” hole through the decoy the size will depend on what the propeller shaft size is. Now take the axel rod and push it into your drilled holes now slide the flat nuts (optional) up against the decoy body and keep it centered. Then add the nylon spacers, propellers and cap nuts. Then get your sign out and cut 4 pieces 2” X 8” the long cut will be parallel with the corrugation of the sign material, sand the side with the Add and paint flat black. When dry use a filet knife and slice down the center of the new wing then slide them on the props one side white and one side black and add a little glue to hold them in place. Now take a piece of scrap ¼ plywood and drill a ¼ inch hole for the mounting and centering of the decoy, place that into the access hole on  the bottom of the decoy and secure with sheet-rock screws. Take the garden stake and hacksaw off one end, inside their will be a metal conduit it may need to be reamed a little to accept the ¼ bolt shaft.

If you want flapping add fishing dodgers in the place of the wings. Paint one side white and one side black and remove the extra tackle hardware. Both work fairly well, note the dodgers take more wind,
