.308 hand loaded with Federal Match brass, primer, Varget powder, Hornady 165gn SST.

Pretty much same here, but with 165 Partition or Accubond.  It is either that or .270 Win with 150 Partition or Accubond and IMR 4831.

Mine would either be 375 H&H or a 30 cal of some sort.

Until I started archery hunting 4 years ago I used the only high powered rifle I currently own. .243 win model 70. I love it. My grandpa gave it to me when I was 9 and I killed 9 deer with it out to 300 yards with 0 problems. It will be my son's first rifle. Now he is giving me a pre 64 mod 70 30 06. I have a question about this gun if anyone has any experience with one. I will be rifle hunting in Montana and blacktail hunting here on the Westside next year and want to be comfortable out to 500 yards. Will this gun be a good choice for longer range shooting with the right cartridge and scope? Pardon the thread jack :chuckle:

Simply put, YES the model 70 is probably one of the best actions ever made, and in the 30-06 cartridge will be good out to 500 yards if you are a proficient with it. It will kill big game animals NO-PROBLEM at 500. I would still recommend that you get within 400 though for overall ethics. A 30-06 will drop 27 inches at 400 yards, and wind drift alone is too much to compensate for most hunters. Get a .165 or a .150 for flatter shooting.

Just wondering if you could only pick one rifle for bear, elk, moose, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, small game what would you pick? My personal preference is the 30-06 shooting the .165 grain Hornady Superformance. Can you say LIGHTS OUT. What's your favorite?

Spot on  :yeah: but I hand load my 165's
