Hi everyone,

Longtime lurker here....just thought I'd throw this out here and hope for the best. I'm looking for a started or even the right finished lab. If anyone has one or knows of one that for sale, I'm in the market for one. Not overly picky on color or sex either. Thanks for your help/time and Happy New Year to all.......

It'll depend a lot on how much your wanting to spend. I've considered selling mine. I love the starting process, so have considered selling and starting over and just keep repeating that cycle. Only problem is my kids love her.

Not a bad place to start. Also call Bucko at Conway. He sells a lot of gun dogs for all the Pro Field Trial trainers. Henninger, Gonia, Petopia and others often call Conway asking if they have any clients looking for washouts.

Expect minimum $3-5,000 for a decent started dog. Good basic blind skills, handling 200 yard blinds easily. Doubles and triples. Often, you can get a really nice dog which might not be up to snuff for field trials but, the owner wants it to go to a really good home. I placed a training partners dog with a friend for $3K. She had about $25K in training spent on her. After three years of training she wasn't going to make it as a trial dog so, the owners move on. Thats how the folks with $$ play.

I must say that if you can find a dog that doesnt cut the mustard in feild trials like what Happy decribed, that is the way to go for sure. have a good buddy that Has a black lab like that and for a hunter it was spectacular!

You may also try Long Hollow Retrievers near Ellensburg. He trained my dog, and i was happy with him.

I spoke to Ryan over the summer and he had a female (Kara) that he said he would be willing to sell.  The price he gave me was $5000.  I thought he was selling one of his studs also.  Can't remember which one (I think it was Mac), but I recall the asking price was $10k.

Can't hurt to give him a call.

I just heard he's working a "real" job not training. probably working about 30 hours less a week...

I have always thougtht training dogs would be a tough full time job... I would guess he could make more money training and selling started dogs on the side than trying to do it full time...

Many work and train on the side, others have money. The guys doing it full time are often breeding and campaigning dogs all over the country as well.

I'd imagine horseback trialing is where the real money is. Lots of doctors, lawyers, and so forth with money to burn will pay A LOT to have dogs run in field trials and win, particularly for the national championship.
