Bow for a 9 yo
« on: October 27, 2014, 11:12:25 PM »
I've decided that I want to teach my 9 year old daughter how to hunt and I think archery is the method I want to teach her.
She has shown a lot of interest in hunting and she has always been fascinated by my bow. I would like to get some advice from the members here about bow selection. I thought I had read a thread in the past talking about good bows that adjust to lower settings for kids, but that can then be adjusted back up to hunting weights as they get bigger and stronger, but I couldn't find it.
I don't want to get her a cheapo beginners bow like they sell at various stores for $50-$75. Those look ands feel like toys and I doubt they would hold up for long. I want her to take it seriously therefore I would like to get her a serious bow.
She has a 21.25" draw. For now.
She is athletic, but still a 9 year old kid so she won't be able to pull much weight yet.
I want to pick something up for her for Christmas. I am thinking I will try to find something used. What suggestions can you guys (and gals?) give me?

In the same situation with my 9 y/o son. Don't want cheap because I want it to be accurate and powerful enough to hunt with in a couple years. Also don't want to spend too much on a hobby he might not enjoy as much as I do. I've been advised to check out the Bear Apprentice (thanks radsav). Diamond makes a great youth bow also.

Here is one thread.

Use the search button between Help and Profile above here not the box in the upper right corner.  Try youth bows to begin with.  There have been a lot of threads regarding this topic.  Diamond Infinite Edge I think is one that has been suggested.

I read through the other thread. And found a few suggestions that seemed to repeat a lot and so looked around for some pricing.

I found a Bear Apprentice 3 for $299.00 new. I'm trying to get clarification about what all is included with it.
 BEAR Apprentice 3 SPECIFICATIONS •SPEED (IBO) 265 FPS •WEIGHT 2.9 LBS •BRACE HEIGHT 6" •AXLE TO AXLE 27.5" •Peak Draw Weight 15-50lb •Draw Length Range 15in to 27 in •70% Let Off •Cable Slide Slide

And a Diamond Infinite Edge for $325.00 New. Includes: 3-Pin Apex Sight, Hostage XL Arrow Rest, Octane DeadLock Lite Quiver, tube peep sight and a BCY String Loop.
3.2LBS • draw length range of 13-30 inches • draw weight range from 5-70 pounds.

They both look good. I'm leaning a little towards the diamond because if she does lose interest it has a draw length that I could use. The Bear won't adjust to the length I would need.

I bought a mission craze for my son on his 8th birthday this year and it is awesome the adjustability is really good. Its a bow he can grow up with until he is fully grown.

I don't know anything about the Diamond bow, but would highly recommend the Bear apprentice. Bought one for my son a year ago, and it has been great. Real easy to adjust draw length, and feels/looks like a "real" bow. No complaints...

I've been looking up all these suggestions and taking a good look at them online.
These are all great bows. I think I could pick up any one of these and she will be over-joyed.
Thanks for all the advice.

Ok, I'll go out on a limb here. At 9 she's way too young to actually 'hunt'. At this age just emphasize the fun of going shooting with dad. I have coached a lot of kids and 75% of them , especially girls, enjoy shooting a stick bow more than a compound.

A good quality 20 -25 pound draw stick bow with matched arrows shoots straight and has plenty of power for small game if the child wants to go there. Teach the fundamentals of archery - draw, follow through, release, and instinct first with a simple bow. Once they can shoot a stick bow well it's easy to make the transition to a mechanical bow.

My 7 year old girl is shooting a Diamond Atomic. Diamond makes a great bow and the little ones are very popular. That Bear Apprentice is up there too. My kid is shooting with a release and all without issue. Anyway...for a 9 year old I wouldn't buy the Atomic because it's tiny but I think any of the others mentioned above would be great.

Thanks. I'm compiling a pretty good list now. I figure I will make a final decision by this weekend.

Scotsman, What you're saying makes sense, but she will definitely want a compound bow. She has been fascinated by my bow for years and knowing my daughter the way I do she will fell disappointed if she were to open her big Christmas gift and have a bow that doesn't resemble mine. Once I made the decision that I would start her on the road to hunting archery I knew that it would mean equipping her with a decent compound bow and putting in the work to make sure she will be a safe and ethical hunter. Thanks though for the suggestion.

I just bought: 'Infinite Edge Bow Package' by Diamond Archery for $319.00.

Thank you to everybody for your help and suggestions. It was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Every bow suggested was awesome and my daughter would have been absolutely thrilled with any of them. I picked the Infinite edge because it provided everything I wanted at a reasonable price point.
