300rum,
I noticed how quiet it was too. Even though I can't hike anymore, I still can get something to answer a call or two. I saw 4 deer in Stites and that was it. There wasn't even hardly any sounds in the areas I went, eerie for sure.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

This was also the first time I did not see any elk at all.  I usually always see at least one really good bull.  I don't carry a tag because I don't want to take them out by myself but I didn't even see an elk this year.

Hey campmeat.

I hear the reason you can't find wolves in Idaho is cause the all moved to the palouse / Pullman area.  The wolves are smart and know they are still protected in WA so the relocated with the help of some westside liberals.  Idaho no longer has a wolf problem.... :chuckle:

Yeah, good point!!  I have heard that some have to shoot 4-20 before they recover one.  They are tough animals.

The taxidermist in Weippe had a picture of a 213 or 203 lb wolf shot in the Idaho Palouse. I forget the actually weight, but it was HUGE. I saw the one that the women bow hunter shot a couple years ago. It was stuffed in a leaping mount. It was very cool and weighed 92 lbs.

You were in the right areas when you went up Shoshone Creek.  We were camped there 3 years ago, right below the Little Guard look out and had them howling above camp.  Also, there is a pack running around up Steamboat creek rd.  Heard them during archery season this year, howled at them, they howled back, played with them for a hour or so, but it was dark and they didn't come up out of the canyon until morning, but I had already moved on to a different hunting spot.  My hunting buddy stayed there to hunt, let out a cow call and they went crazy, needless to say we didn't hunt there anymore for elk.  They are not stupid animals and probably one of the hardest animals to kill in the woods right now.  Im going back this winter on my sled to find em.

They were howling last nite around Grangemont, I set up on the edge of a clearcut for elk. I just got there and they started up about 100 yards away. They only howled for a couple of minutes. Most were in the timber, but one was in the clearcut, I was hoping to see one, but next time I heard them they sounded like a mile away. When I hunted opening there was a pack by Bertha Hill. One camp below me said they howled for two nites.

So you are doing this without a guide service, correct?

If you're asking me, yes, no guide service. I just ask a lot of questions on different wolf forums. When the forums figure out you're not a wolf hugger, they start telling you areas to hunt, not publicly of course. And so far, everything I've been told has been accurate.

You can hunt wolves from August to June into the following year in certain areas if my memory is right. You need to buy the next years license and tag. Pullman to Headquarters Idaho is a good day trip for hunting wolves. Plus Clarkia to Avery and Fernwood areas too.

:yike: Dang...I drove through there a month and a half ago and from Kooskia to Grangeville I must have drove past 150+ deer! All on private land of course.
