Dry sauté and then a little butter and garlic.

I look for these every time I go to elk camp. We called them goats beard. We would shave off discolored parts then pull it apart into strips about the size of a french fry. Dip them in pancake batter and fry in butter until crisp. So yummy.

I found some last year and they are delicious.  Hands down one of my favorite wild mushrooms.  Saute in butter and add salt and pepper at the end.   

Bet it would be good in a stir fry.

That is one of the problems......they can grow higher than a person can reach.

Yeah it's a Hericium. As others have said it's good. I've eaten it fried in garlic butter. It tasted surprisingly similar to everything else that gets fried in garlic butter. In other words - delicious!

Me lokiidog picked a couple today and cooked one up with butter, yum yum! 

I think they taste like morels on steroids, I won't be driving by them anymore with out stoping to pick some!

Those were the appetizers before our T-bone steaks.

Yes, I eat these every time I can get some, I call them chicken of the woods, there great in stews.

These were awesome, though I dry sauteed the next one and I think cooking more moisture out of it made it better.  It also didn't need the butter for great flavor.

Back East they call them Teardrops, They are by far my favorite. You add them to a nice Ribeye steak cooking it, when done put the mushroom on your plate and throw the steak away.  Just kidding, The mushroom takes on the flaror of the steak and is so much better.

I found a ton of them this year, look at dead trees and logs that's where I found them. Even on the cut ends of logs that have been down quite a while.

Great book written by a UW Prof and has been reprinted and updated numerous times. I think it has been updated 5 times. all titles are some variation of savory wild mushroom. I have found older versions in a used book store CHEEP!

The books are good but going out with some one knowledgable is much better. One of my hunting buddies from Silver Arrow Bowmen used to belong to the mushroom club and does a good job of studying mushrooms when we find them hunting. The books are good at identifying the mushrooms but not necessarily when your out hunting. To be safe, if you find a large batch of shrooms you need to take several cell phone pics, take a few home to do some tests. Examination of the mushroom's physical appearance, a spore print, and its growing location are BIG indicators that narrow stuff down quick.

you should also only eat a small ammount of "safe" mushroom the first time you eatone... you could have a bad allergic reaction... Mushroom hunting is pretty cool onc you have the proper understanding and tools. good luck
