A spike is when the elk has antlers that are small.

In 1989, a harvest management strategy was implemented with a spike bull general season for the Blue Mountians

In 1994, the harvest strategy was changed to spike-only bull during general season for the Yakima and Colockum herds

The state experimented with a spike  only season for the southwest units but changed it after one year to the 3 point reg

To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

and they should change it back in the colockum and Yakima units next year.
Seriously.............they should change it back to something that actually exists.
Wednesday, the game warden that stopped to check my tag and license said he only seen ONE true spike bull this season and it was down on a ranch where it was taken.
TANNERITE needed for target practice on opening day of each hunting season.

There were 4 true spikes in the wind farm Sat.  They ran 60mph when you got to 1000 yards

The 2009 season was the first year that "true spike" was differentiated in Washington.

Gotta be wayyyyyyyy longer than 2009. I shot a cow elk in the Nile area in yakima when I drew a cow tag in 2000 ,and it was spikes only for bulls then. 1994 sounds about right. WHY WOULD THEY WANT US TO SHOOT YOUNG BULLS ANYWAYS? They never get a chance to grow big. It's a dumb regulation, someone had their head way up their ass on that one.

Nice work Bob33 - you managed to confuse even more people.   :chuckle:

True spike elk only applies to those certain areas pertaining to the Colockum herd.

A spike, is a spike, is a spike. A spike that does not branch above the ear is a spike. Just my  :twocents:

Missed that. You're right. "Spike only" is not "true spike".

Oh well - maybe someone will ask when "true spike" started and now it's answered.  :chuckle:
