338 lapua is a great choice. Brass and ammo isn't to crazy $ wise. The 338's are hard to beat at the extended ranges. I just got my 30-378 build done and it will be a 1k gun.

Isn't the Laupa still one of the more expensive rounds in the .338 class? A lot more than the Edge, no?

I am a reloader, I don't mind having to fire form brass or resize necks on brass. The simpler the better though.  :chuckle:

It's tough to heat the value of the big 338's. Once  break .338 bullets get expensive and the powder to push them gets crazy. One of my coworkers has a 338 lapua and a 416. He said that it's too expensive to feed the Barrett.

My all time favorite high horsepower round was the 375/50bmg.

I've heard rumors that there is some connection between RBros and Shawn Carlock.  It that just rumor rubbish or is there something interesting there?  If there is that might tilt my opinion towards the Edge :dunno:

I had a couple hunters with a nice long range 338 edge that let me shoot, there was a 6 mph cross wind.

First shot at a 36 inch rock at 1130 yards I hit 6 inches below center.
Second shot at 10 inch rock at 1118 yards I hit again.
Third shot at 1790 yards I missed an 11 inch rock.  (this was 1 mile and 30 yards)
Fourth shot at 1790 yards I hit the 11 inch rock.

I'm still amazed I could hit anything at that distance not to mention the first time I ever shot the gun. It seems like something I want to get involved in, was a lot of fun to say the least.

I know there are several long range shooters on the forum so I thought I would ask around about caliber before deciding what I should get. You never can hear too many opinions!

I do want good effectiveness at 1000+ yard shots on big game. It seems the .338 caliber 300 grain berger is a pretty good bullet for the task, that is what the guys were using and what I shot at the rocks.

Which is the better case 338 edge or 338/378?
Is there a better caliber than 338?
that sounds like a lot of fun!

carp,

Got pictures of that badboy ?

I've wanted a 30-378 or a 338-378. But, $150 for a box of ammo is out of my league.......
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I am in the process of thinking about a long range rifle for next year.

Looking at Remington model 700 LR

But can't decide on caliber . Would like 30.06 but have no idea about the best one.
I am not into much more recoil than .06. Not into muzzle brakes either.
Not planing on 1000+

Maybe 600 or less.

Missed out on a buck this year at about 450 up hill because I just did not feel good about the shot.
I will be following along.

Check out the 6.5-284. Same case capacity as 06 with better ballistics and no muzzle brake needed. I would not hisitate to shoot fur to 850 with mine. Hits steel to 1560 no problem. Thats where i run out of scope.

If you reload and you're considering a 338 Lapua, I think you would like a 338 Lapua improved.  Improving the 338 Lapua case has a very nice increase over the straight 338 Lapua.  Typically, the improved version/s of the 338 Lapua will shoot about 200fps faster than a standard 338 Edge and 200-250fps faster than the straight 338 Lapua.  Shawn's Edge+P will shoot pretty close to the same fps as a Lapua improved, while his 338 Terminator (338 Lapua Imp+P) is about another 100 fps above them.

There is no doubting Lapua's brass quality.  It may seem expensive at first glance but it will pay for itself in the long run.

There is a lot of brass and ammo that is not to expensive. If you look at nosler brass the cost of the lapua brass compared to the 338 rum is almost identical in price. The 300 rum brass "which is necked up to make the 338 edge" and 338 lapua brass are also identical in price and you don't have to forum any brass with the lapua.
