Be careful Bearpaw, you're about to enter the point of no return.   :chuckle:  You want to get some powder? double that thought.  You need to get bullets?  The amount you're thinking about isn't going to be enough, and so on.  Why do I warn you?  Because once you start, you can't stop.  It's addictive and a whole lot of fun.  10-20 rounds of playing ends up being 60-80.  :IBCOOL:  Enjoy!

Bearpaw - it appears that you have already made you decision.  And based on the feedback, it sounds like the range of calibers are all similar.

I shoot a 300 RUM and find that I don't have enough time to target shoot and work on load development.  I am shooting really well out to 500 - 600 yards.  I don't practice enough beyond that.  I have committed to having some work done to it this winter and will be making some time to play with some different loads.

I think you would be really happy with any of the following:

300 RUM
338 RUM
338 Edge
338 Lapua
30-378 Weatherby
33-378 Weatherby

The 338 heavier chamberings seem to be the most popular as they run the highest balistic coefficients and they can still push them fast enough out of these cases to make it worthwhile.

Every once in awhile the .325 conversation comes up, which would be the 8mm-300RUM, which Ultracat calls the 8MM Ultra Cat.  I would think this less popular version would work well, but provides less selection in bullet choices.  But it just depends on how bad you want to be different from the herd.

Dale,
I know a group of guys that shoot long distance every 3rd Sunday of the month in Northport. Let me know if you'd like to see the different calibers they use and I'll ask the owner if I could bring you up for a couple hours. It's a good ol' boys club and they want to keep the riff-raff out, if you know what I mean.

I'd check out the Allen mags

The 270 or 7mm Allens would be awesome with the correct bullet

With at said it really doesn't matter...range..dope..shoot

For 1k+ it's hard to beat the 338's.  The edge or lapua imp would be the better of the bunch. Here is an example of what they typically run in 30" tubes out of the shop

338 lapua 2800-2825
338 edge 2900-2920
338 lapua imp 2975-3000

Using n570 in any of the above will boost speed but it's been impossible to find for a couple years.

Another option is my 300 rogue bases on the 338 lapua case.  In 28" barrels it has been running 215's at 3400.  Takes a bit of case prep though.

It just went to the forum and didn't show the gun. Plus, I don't want to sign up on a forum just to look at something.
