Want to start bow hunting, can't dicide on/find a bow.
« on: November 03, 2014, 09:38:37 AM »
Well, I know there are already hundreds of these threads, but I can't find the right one. I want a bow that is around $250. I have been looking at the Hoyt ruckus, and the PSE chaos.  The chaos is cheaper, $100-$200 on ebay, new, and is a little bit faster. I guess I just want opinions on which one might be better for hunting, or if I'm missing a bow that might also serve me well.

Thanks.

Yes lots of practice. I want to get my bow as soon as possible, and I won't be hitting the woods until next season.

You get what you pay for.  I would save a little longer and buy something better.

One thing I would like to add is don't discount the value of purchasing a bow new/used from your local bow shop. Yes, you will pay more than you will on CL or Ebay. But, if you need something it will cost you less in time and more than likely money. Support your local shop and they will support you when you need it the most.

First off, go to your local bow shop and get measured for draw length.  This will help you get the correct size bow no matter where you decide to purchase.
I agree to support your local bow shop but choices are limited depending where you live and what manufacturer the shop stocks.  I would buy a used bow for a first one just to see if bowhunting is for you.  Upgrade  when you can and when you know what characteristics you're looking for(speed, forgiveness, shooting fingers or release) :twocents:

I do know that I have a 25.5" draw length. And, yeah I do need to go back up to the bow shop. The closest one is The Nock point in mount lake terrace.

I bought a Martin Threshold from Nock Point and couldn't be happier.... they set it up with a whisker and stabilizer for $350 and it shoots over 300 FPS. I told myself I would buy a new bow when after I filled my first tag but can't let it go. Freezer is full and just put a new string on it for late season blacktail.

Nock point is the best shop around and they will tune your bow every years free of charge. When I do upgrade I'm going back to them.
Thank God for Hunting...gives me something to think about at work.

Thanks for all the input guys. I definitely need go to the nock point and try a few bows, and also the van winkles archery shop, because they have a few bows that I am interested in that the nock point does not cary.

I picked my bow up from a guy on Archerytalk.com, you might check their adds.  A lot of guys on there will buy a couple of bows a year it seems and then sell the ones they don't like at a decent price.  It is still a good idea to get some bows in your hands at the shops and figure out what you liike.

Your draw length is pretty short, so you are either a short guy, a girl (both observations, not critiques   ;)  ), or young and growing.  If the latter, think about looking at something with some draw length changeability.

I am the latter of the three. I will check out the archery talk forum, thanks. I have shot a friends bow, it was a Mathews mission craze. I only shot like 15 arrows through it, but I liked it, so I want to check out some more bows of that brand at Van Winkles archery.

I just got my bow this week from Cabela's on line. The PSE Stinger G3 I think it is. Regular price was $399 and it was on sale for $299 and I used my 150 points and got it half price. I've been shooting it the last couple of days and so far I'm happy with it. I've never had a compound before so I can't compare it with anything else. So far I'll give it a  It may still be on sale, not sure.

Left handed bows aren't all that hard to find. My aunt shoots a Mathews mission craze, it comes left and right handed. It's a nice little bow, This year she got a huge 5x5 white tail with it set at 42lb draw weight and 25" draw length, so no problems taking down a big buck.
