I will offer my .02. By that time the snow should have pushed most of the elk down. There is some ffth land in the unit but not a ton. Other than that it would be beneficial to have permission on private ground.

You wouldn't happen to have any contacts over there would you? I have never hunted over there and I am kinda looking to expand my season. Thanks either way though I do appreciate it.

I don't in the Dayton unit. I am more than happy to cruise out and show you where I think the better ffth places are if you made a trip over.

Yeah that would be great a group of us were looking into doing something like this in January so if it isn't to much trouble that would be awesome.

Ive done it before.  There is state land by Maloney Mountain, but when I went, the road was iced over and I couldnt get there.  I made it half way up  a little hill and slid backwards down it.  Ended up running around farm land and not seeing anything.  If you can get up there, you might have a good chance finding cows.

Did the same thing five years ago, ended up stuck in a snow drift in another spot.  Did see tons of deer and one nice bull elk.  I am sure someone is going to follow up my post by saying that was the last bull in the blues and bigfoot got it right after I left.  :chuckle:

It was still a fun hunt, better than working that is for sure.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

I've done that before also but without the sliding on ice anywhere. We had trouble finding public land that had elk sign. IMO I feel I wasted my time. I would try and get landowner permission that have elk wintering on their land.

Its hit and miss, sometimes the roads are great, sometimes they are crap.  I couldnt even get up it in a 4 wheeler.  It was a sheet of ice.
