big boat blind ??????/
« on: November 05, 2014, 03:25:41 PM »
So here's my "pipe dream"  :dunno:

Most of you know I bought a new 18' boat earlier this year, and I had this "pipe dream" of taking it some place on a duck hunt. Some place with more remote areas, like maybe, the big C, snake river, moses, Etc....... no place specific yet but my thoughs are some thing like, use the boat to access remote area to hunt for ducks, either from the boat or from shore.

Example 1. anchor the boat up and string our some deeks behind it, cover the boat with an camp net and hunt from the boat or....

Example 2, use the boat to get to a remote area, pull the boat to shore, beach, indian anchor, etc.... cover the boat with a camo net and hunt down the beach some where from the shore.

Im still a rookie when it comes to bird hunting,m being waterfowl or upland, so  :dunno:

Any one do some thinh like this often  :dunno:

keep in mind, my boat is not camo-ed out or do I plan on building a blind for it. Its ab 18' Raider, mainly used for fishing, so I have no plans on painting it for duck hunting, just wonder if a camo netting would be suffice  :dunno:

I guess my dream is to Sit back with some hunting buddys, stay warm and out of the cold by sitting under the canvas cover, draped with a camo net on the top and the back of the boat, shooting ducks and geese  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

We can all have dreams, right  :brew:

Your thoughts

For divers if you can anchor close to shoe with a camo boat you can do just fine in the boat. If you're close to shore they won't be flying over you so it limits their ability to see into the boat. Divers are so low that the angle they're seeing you at is much different than peddlers.

Plus you can run a grill and make breakfast in the boat.  That's pretty nice.

I have limited experience hunting from a boat but the experience I do have always found it cramped.  I also felt like birds would flair to it.  It was a smaller boat 14' but all camo'd up with a blind etc.  Unless there is no shore i would put it 100yrds away from you and hunt from the shore.  If you have to be in the boat make sure its pushed back into reeds etc. so they cant see your outline. Then make sure you dont fall out.

Without camo or a blind I would ditch around the corner and hunt form shore unless you were hunting scoters or resident Canadas.

Move to the Historic Atlantic Flyway, some of the best blinds around and most people hunt divers out of bush boats.  Poor duck hunting, but you could live in some of the blinds we built.

For years we used a 19 foot boat to get to where we unloaded gear then stashed the boat down river and walked back then built tumble weed blinds. The big yellow boat was never covered but was about a city block away. A lot of birds on big C will show in the next week.

I bought an old army parachute from a surplus store, zip tied many clumps of camo netting to the parachute, and cut 2 spots for shooters to sit...works awesome and didn't have to paint the boat

The parachute does a great job covering up all the shiny parts of the boat, the camo netting adds some dimension and texture, and the whole thing is fairly light and packs away nicely.

Don't matter what Kinda boat you hunt out of, if the fowl you are hunting have been poked at a few times, you have too be well blended in to get them to commit.
With a bigger boat, I think you would be better off to tie it off 100 yds up or down stream (or however far shore conditions allow) and hunt from shore.
I hunt out a boat that can be blended in pretty well and sometimes it's still tough.

Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

we have a 16' jon boat... hides really good... the key is blending in to your surroundings.

The big C has a "tide" water dropps as they day progresses. We have always hunted from shore with the boat stowed up/down stream anchored out in the water so it doesnt end up on the rocks.  :twocents:
