Set a trap on this bait set today. Bobcat and civet cat both working it. A little worried which one will be in the trap in the morning.

After looking at this photo of the civet I got really interested! I didnt think we (or Idaho) had civets. I did as much internet research as I could and all I could dig up was something called a ringtail. But the ringtail looks nothing like what you have pictured here. So I kept digging, then I found something called a marbled polecat, looked similar, but I could still tell it wasnt what I was looking for. After about 30 more minutes of internet sluething I went to the Idaho game regs for fur trapping and noticed a small notation at the bottom of the page
"The coyote, striped skunk, spotted skunk, long-tailed weasel, raccoon and ermine, also considered furbearers, are classified as predatory wildlife and are open to hunting or trapping. "

BANG It hit me, all of you guys are saying how much these "cats" stink so much, maybe they are actually skunks!

Did a quick image search for spotted skunk, narrowed it down even more by searching western spotted skunk and I found this little guy.

Looks like a pretty good match to me, but then again I have never seen the civet cat or spotted skunk in person.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading through and watching all your videos. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to the next trapping season to see how well you do.

Civet cat is another common name for spotted skunks. They are very common in W WA and W OR. They are known to exist widely throughout North America but they are pretty scarce elsewhere.

Good to know! I had no idea there were more than one type of skunk in the first place.

There are four species of skunks in North America. Striped, spotted, hooded and hognosed

The really old timers in OR also called them mountain skunks.
