Why not the Taurus? (44)

I have held and cycled the action on the Taurus lightweight 44's... they fit my hand great. I am looking for and needing a packable, 4 inch 44 mag for backpacking and archery hunting. I like/love the 629 and the new 69... but they are in the neighboorhood of 3-5 hundred dollars more.

This gun will NOT be shot a lot... it will be packed on my hip belt and stuffed under the front seat... it'll get a few hundred rounds through it over the next 5 years... Is there anything to be scared of?

Just curious, cause armslist has one local here... its the Ti lite...

I had the Taurus Raging bull 44.  The barrel blew in half in my hands.  Thats why not!
I got a brand new pistol as a replacement, and the cylinder play was so sloppy, I was afraid to even shoot it.  Maybe I got 2 lemons, but I wont own another.

I had an M44 and the cylinder would lock up and or come out of timing. There servive was great, but at what cost.

That sucks... I guess you get what you pay for?? Any positive feedback guys? The gun I'm looking at is the 444 Ti ultra lite... The guy has a smith and it and is selling it... wonder why???

I have the m44 and gave had zero issues with it at all. Shoots great and cycles well. I'd get another.

Not the 44 mag. But I had a 357 mag cia 2 1/2. With not many rounds maybe 20 the wheel fell out  Fixed it and sold it won't own another Taurus. My bro in-law has a 6in tracker 357 mag within about the same amount of rounds 20. The front site fell off. He fixed it and is looking into selling it. Life time warranty they need it. Both these happened first time out. Buyer beware

ya I guess im blown away... ive owned the 6" raging bull and now I currently carry the snub 44 mag Taurus, my dad has the tracker, all my uncles own the snubbies and the long 44 mags and not one issue has ever come up with any of ours... Maybe we just are really lucky... or its just the ultra light part that is the issue?

I have the Taurus Raging Bull in .454 Casull with no issues.  A very accurate shooter.

I shoot a titanium .375 with a 6" barrel.  It's a great gun, would absolutely recommend it.

I have and shoot a 444 4" ultra light. Bought it for back packing.
I've put about 60rds of factory hornady 240gr XTPs and about 70rds of 240gr XTPs home loads.
Never had a problem other than the brass is a little tight ejecting from the cylinder after shooting my reloads but my buddies 329pd has the same issue with hot reloads.

I did replace the front sight with a custom fiber optic one than is taller, because my gun was shooting 1' high at 30yds with no more adjustment left in the rear sight.

Works great for what I bought it for, If i have the urge to target shoot or develop more loads then I just use my trusty old Blackhawk.

shoot, I've got an old Rossi, which is supposed to be even worse than a taurus!  My gun (.357) is VERY accurate and i Love it!  if you can handle the gun to check for cylinder play and it seems tight, i wouldn't have ANY problem buying it!

I had a buddy who had a .357 Taurus revolver. The gun would fire a few rounds and heat up and expand. The hammer wouldn't contact the next round in the cylinder  After some cool off time it would shoot again.

I am going to see if the guy will let me shoot a few rounds out of it... if not, I will at least handle it. I honestly am not going to shoot this gun much... but still... its gotta be there when I need it... while playing i'll just shoot 44 sp. out of it... or light handloads... but I will be loading it with heavy casts for backpacking in bear country....

I have several Taurus firearms, both revolvers and pistols.  Thousands of rounds of very hot reloads and never an issue.  just my experience.

Heavy loaded rounds going side by side with my Super Redhawk is what killed my Taurus! At least you will get one shot at the Bear before it breaks!!!

If it has to be there when you need it why even consider it after hearing mostly horror stories?

i went with the ruger alaskan 44mag. great finish, shoots way way nicer than i though it was going to and i dont notice the weight on my pack. i carried it for a ton of miles in MT this year and never noticed it was there.

I have the Tracker in .44 and have put many, many  rounds through it. No problems what so ever.

Ive got the titanium ultra lite 44mag and the fit and finish is fine and so is the gun...........no problems ever.  Very nice carry gun for the woods.

Why pay for a revolver/company with known issues when you can pay a little more and get a ruger redhawk? Sure there are lots of Taurus' out there without problems, but there are a lot of them with problems. When spending that much money why take that chance? I have a Ruger redhawk 44 and a s&w 629 and I believe the redhawk is the better gun. Slightly better fit and finish, stronger frame, better sights, and a lighter smoother double action trigger. The 629 does have a slightly better single action trigger though. Check out the redhawk/Alaskan, it's a very good revolver!

Meaning no disrespect to other owners of this handgun.
I shot mine loose (timing issue) with less than 50 factory rounds. Lipsky's? Took it back and applied the credit to a Redhawk.

I have a stainless Taurus Tracker.  It shoots great, I have had no issues.

I've had a SS Tracker in 41 Mag for quite a few years and it has been flawless.  I've had a few S&W wheel guns over the years, Model 28, Custom Model 13 HB with adjustable sights added, and a Model 34 4" RB and the Tracker is no dog compared to the S&W's. I can't comment on the titanium framed ones.

I had the 5-shot taurus tracker .44 4" for backpacking.  No problems other than it is LOUD AS H*LL with the barrel porting.  I touched one off in the woods one time and my ears rang for 18 hours.

That being said, I thought I would use it for backpacking until I realized how much weight and size I was packing for something that I probably would never need.  I decided my real concern is a black bear, wolf or cougar sneaking into my tent at night, not being able to shoot accurately at 25 yards with enough fire power for a grizz. 

When I made that realization, I moved to a LCR 357.  Weighs a heck of a lot less, is accurate from the back of my tent to the front of it, and will put down anything I'm likely to encounter in WA.

I have a stainless Taurus Tracker.  It shoots great, I have had no issues.

  I also have the Taurus tracker in .44 mag. It's been a work horse for me, never failed me. It's not pretty with all the carrying I've done with it but I've never had an issue. After seeing a big sow griz and cub at 80 yards this year in Montana I was glad I had it and would have reached for it before my can of bear spray no matter what the "Experts" say. My only complaint is that it is a little heavy. One day I will upgrade to a lighter model.

I have a 6 inch tracker titanium in 45 lc. I have shot hundreds of rounds through. From cowboy plinkers to hsm bear loads it has never failed me or had any issues whatsoever.

I had thousands of rounds through my Ti Tracker 41 mag with out an issue. They weren't lite loads either!

I also had a Raging Bull 454, model 85 (I think) 357, and a Tracker 44 Mag. All of them ran 100% of the time.

Quality Control seems to be a weakness with Taurus sometimes.

I had a Titanium Tracker in 45acp for around 5 years.
Never an issue.
Nice to have a weatherproof, lightweight wheelgun on your hip with enough barrel length to actually deliver some velocity.
Ruger Redhawk would weigh approximately 3 times as much.
