WA Raffle Moose
« on: December 17, 2008, 12:53:28 PM »
OK - he's not the biggest, but by far the prettiest bull we saw all week.  With three big trips already on the books and a fourth early hunt for moose, I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull off a December hunt if I tried to ride it out to the end, and then take a gamble on the weather.  Boy it sure would've been easier with this tag if I lived over there!  Oh well, sometimes you have to take what you can get.

That was also the only trip for my dad and daughter to come along, so it was cool harvesting a bull with them there to enjoy it!  My daughter was even more pumped than I was, as you can see from the smile on her face.  She's killed a couple deer already, but now she really wants a moose tag after that trip.

I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out the picture posting.  We'll see if this works?

We started out in the Kettle Range and then hit 49 Degrees North on our way down to hunt the Huckleberry.  We then popped over to the Pend Orielle side of 49 for the remainder of the hunt.  We saw 14 moose, half of which were bulls.

Shot him the end of September, so he was pretty rutty.  Man oh man, they sure are stinky buggers!  It's like real nasty rutty buck, times 100.  When we opened the canopy in the morning the smell about knocked us over.

Anyways, never hurts to be lucky.

Thanks.

There's more to the wife's elk hunt, but we ended up eating the tag - it didn't taste all that great either!  Long story short, we sat on a 380ish bull Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with her hunt set to open on Monday.  Sunday, the last day of deer season, some guy wasn't seeing any deer and thought it would be cool to see how close he could get to this bull and his cows.  We didn't see the bull again til we were on our last couple days and just didn't have enough time to sit on him til he made a mistake.

We had a good time and saw several bulls in the 370 range, one in the 380s, one in the 390s and three or four we thought would break 400 pretty easy.  She passed on a few small bulls, holding out for the one we'd been watching, but it wasn't to be?  She was pretty bummed, but that's the way it goes sometimes when you hold out til the end.

As for the pictures, we were having a tough time with the whole picture taking program.  It wasn't til I got back that I realized we didn't have any good group shots.
