Got curious about magnification you use
« on: November 11, 2014, 07:23:03 PM »
I'm talking in any type of hunting or target. For walk about I use something in the 2.5x to 10x for both standing and running targets from rabbits to elk-moose. For varmints like gophers and sage rats I use 6x to 32x scopes but rarely go above 14x for the shot but on a cold day have been known to go to 24x to hit an unsuspecting eye ball. And for paper punching I like something in the 24x range but while I did the BR thing I was in the 36x to 50x. The older I get the more power I like.

.270 Win (2-7)
.338 Federal (2-7)
30-06 (4x)
30-06 (3-9)
25-06 (4x)

The '06 sporting the 3-9 will be getting a smaller scope. It came on the gun when I bought it.

Most everything I use is 3 x 9 power, and I like to shoot/hunt with it kept at 6x.

I prefer my scopes to have a low end of 3x or less.  I run 3x-9x's on most rifles, though I'm really fond of 1.5x-5x's and 2.5x-8x's.  Most of my hunting is shorter ranges in thick Westside jungle country.

I leave them on 6x, seems I'll always have time to turn them up, but not down.

My favorite scope is my 3-18 Z6. Hunting on the west side I like to have a lower magnification, but being able to zoom in to 18 comes in really handy at times. Absolutely love this scope, I have a pretty wide range of zoom on other rifles but this is by far my favorite and most versatile

7mm rem mag: 2 x 7
30-06    3 x 9
30-06    4.5 x 14 x 40

I am getting a bit older and having a harder time seeing in the low light situations, so my new 4.5 x 14 x 40 ROCKS, I love it.

3-9 or 2-7 is plenty for me over here on the dry side. Biggest scope I even own is a 3.5-10 Leupold on the .338RUM I never shoot.

close in brush out to 200ish - open sights up to 7 power scopes..

mid ranges out to 400 - 9 to 15 power scopes

beyond 20+ power scopes

higher power scopes makes moving targets hard to acquire

I'm all about matching the magnification to the caliber/gun combo. Here are some of the hunting guns:

Handguns:
7 TCU- 2-6x (usually set on 3x)
30 Herrett- 2.5-8 (set on 4x)
338/375 Ruger- 3.5-10x

RIfles
358 Win- 1.5-6x
375 Ruger- 2.5-8x
30-06- 3-9x
458 Arnold- 3.5-10x

Target guns get as much magnification as I can use under normal conditions. That usually works out to a top end between 20 and 25x on rifles and about 12x on the handguns. The even 10x is enough for shooting MOA sized targets at any range when you're just out having fun. I shoot the 284 pistol out just past 1300 yards on 12x and do pretty well.
