I can't even find a whitetail.

Excuses, i have a lot of.

Worked all summer away from home prevented me from securing access. Thought i could find a buck on feel free to hunt land, or wildlife areas.

Had great advice from some on the board and i am very thankful that those that helped me took the time to do so. But man i have put some miles on my boots, up and down some steep country.
All i have seen is 65 elk (4 big bulls, 2 of them were huge), 50 or so Big horn sheep, i have pictures on my cell phone, not the greatest but it was awesome being 25 feet away from a monster ram.
I have seen 100's of mule deer, a couple real nice bucks. And a total of 2 whitetail bucks, both on private land.

Tomorrow i am going to try a different area, i am going to take the shotgun with me, if i flush any more birds without the shot gun i will kick my own ass.

It could be worse...at least you're not trying to find a blacktail buck.  Usually the one I kill is the only one I see.

Today was a blast. This whole hunt has been fun. Tough, but fun.

I have never shot a pheasant, until today. We hit a few release sites, and i shot 2. only took me 9 shots. I hit the first 2 birds and then couldn't hit the broadside of a barn.
Buddy (is a dad to me) got one. He was my bird dog.

We have to be home tomorrow so we had a last ditch idea, and it payed off.

I was walking a creek draw and i jumped a spike, he looked like he had just had his ass handed to him. Didn't even run. He jumped the fence and was instantly run off by a fork (smallest fork whitey i have ever seen) i tried to put eye guards on him. That fork had been schooling that spike, because they were on a hot doe. I backed off a bit and started rattling just to see what they would do. They took off like they had been shot at. straight up hill. So my buddy and i followed them. We were looking up the draw and there were 5 deer up there now and there was one pushing the fork around and i said Andy i think that is a legal buck. It was 430 and we were losing light. Andy is asking me if he is legal, and i couldn't honestly see 3 points so he waited and they disappeared over the hill. But the big doe stayed. Andy said come sit next to me and watch, i told him i think we should move around the draw, and he said nope that doe is still standing there and she is hot, he will be back. 15 seconds go by and i see him silhouetted against the fading sun and i can see at least 3 points, i told him legal and boom, i hear the thwack and see him fall.
350 yards, 60 degree uphill shot from a 130 grain ballistic tip out of a .270 did the trick. it only took us 2 hours to get him off the mountain in the dark. Great times.
It was a basket 4 point, not the biggest, but sure wasn't the smallest. Will post a pic when i get home.
