Virginia Buck
« on: November 15, 2014, 04:34:02 PM »
Opening day of Virginia rifle season.  Cold morning, 28 degrees with a nice little stiff northern wind.  Saw another spike buck at 30 yards about mid morning.  Couldn't decide if I wanted to go back to the truck or not for lunch. Opted to stay in the stand. Right around noon this fella was walking along the property line, on the wrong side. He was on posted property.  I grunted at him and he ignored me. Kept walking. grunted again, ignored me. He was about 85 yards at this point. Grunted again and he never slowed down, but stared turning slowly towards my leased property. Then he was in the brush and all I could see was his antlers. He stopped about 60 yards away and thrashed a tree. I really thought he was going to continue walking. I grunted again with a tending grunt and he walked a little farther and started thrashing another tree. Then finally stepped into view. Shot and he trotted a little bit, but acted like he hadn't been hit so I shot him again. Bullets were about 3 inches apart. One of the shots blew the top of his heart out. He was nice enough to run a few yards towards the truck instead of back down to the bottom of the hill! 6X5 or as they say back here a 11 pointer.  :)

Great job. That's your first time hunting over there right. Didn't you move there? Congrats

Actually been here 2 years.  First year I joined a hunting club though.  It's been very difficult getting on private property here.  Been a rough 2 years to say the least, but this year has been a blast!

Congrats Fred. That's an outstanding buck. Is that the same one you posted trail cam pictures of a little while back?

Nice buck!

I always hunted the blackpowder season in VA, once the clubs started running deer with dogs during the general season, everything went nocturnal in my neck of the woods.  Hunt club is the only way to go given your location.  General season deer hunting on VDGIF areas is downright scary there.

Boy, that's a real cow compared to most of those dog-sized deer down there. Nicely done, Fred.

Thanks everyone!!!  Not the same buck I got on camera but within 1000 yards.  I still have one more buck tag, would love to zip an arrow through the one I got on camera.  This buck was taken in Fauquier County.
