What kind of map do i need
« on: October 30, 2014, 03:24:02 PM »
So I have been looking for good maps of GMU's 621, 627, 633 and 636. Do I want a topo map or an arial view map. I have looked at topomaps.com and see they have 4 different maps to offer. I would like a map that shows forest service roads that i can drive on as well. I have looked at the stickyin this forum on all the differnt maps to look at but I am not sure what i should be using which is why i came here to find out what everyone recommends. Mainly I will be using the maps for scouting and again a map showing forest service roads would be nice to have.

Thanks for the help.

If the areas are USFS they should have some green trails maps

For 636 a Forest service map would be good. Not the one that covers all of the Olympic National Forest, but the one for that particular ranger district. You should be able to pick one up in Olympia on Black Lake Blvd, or in Hoodsport. The other units you might want the DNR public land maps, and then if you get it narrowed down to more specific areas you could pick up some USFS topo maps.

We just hunted GMU 621 up by Discovery Bay and the Green Trails Map #168S was perfect. It showed elevations, clear-cuts, creeks, logging roads, camp grounds, and DNR Boundaries. STAY AWAY from the MyTopo GMU 621 map! I bought if for $40 and it's blurry, and doesn't have half the information that the Green Trails map has.
