I would like to run a possible future rifle build thru it to determine if it will do what I want.


300WSM, 230 berger Match Hybrid.

Bullet length 1.64"

Boat tail Length 0.24"

Bearing Surface, 0.495"

Nose to Ogive, 0.905"

COAL 3.200

Barrel length either 27" or 29"

I ran the numbers through Load from a Disk and came up with a pretty easy 2700 fps using that info. There are about 8 powders that would work.

With that velocity, it only gets me 75 yards additional trans-sonic range (Mach 1.2) at STP over my little 270 Win. (1175, vs. 1250 yards).

I am still unsure as to how well this cartrige would feed from a AI 300WM magazine.

I would love to be able to run closer to 2800, but I think it might be a bit too hot, and brass would be toast.

But your lil .270win isn't pushing a 230gn bullet!  Comparing apples to oranges here!

you are correct, and the 230 is less prone to wind deflection, but even at 1K yards, the difference in wind deflection with a 5 mph full value wind is only ~3 inches between my 270 Win load and the theoretical 300 WSM load.

The difference in external ballistics is not enough to justify a new build...if I could get closer to 2800 FPS (2850 would be the shiznit), then the build is a winner, especially out past 1500 yards.

A tad more powder might get you closer to 2,850.  The 308Norma (30-338win), allows a bit more total case capacity than the 300wsm does. Brass for the 30-338 is plentiful and much cheaper than the 300wsm. Otherwise, you're looking at 300win. Yes, each of what I mention are belted mags. But realistically, the 300wsm is not an equal to the older proven cartridges.  I wonder if the 300STW would do it?

 York, I'm curious if one of these three can get that bullet to 2,850fps?

Have you run the numbers using the 215 instead of the 230?  Seems like most that shoot a 300 Win Mag or smaller case capacity 30 cal typically go with the 215 and usually the 300 RUM and up they use the 230.  The extra horsepower and FPS of the RUM or necked down Lapua case seems to get better use of the 230's.

a buddy of mine in Idaho recommended the 215 also.

my reason for going with the short case is that I was to mag-feed this thing.

With that said, a 300Dakota or a 300 Norma Mag would both feed from a standard Lapua Mag with a little tweaking.

I would like to stay under 80 grains of powder tho.

I don't have any data in print at hand, but I think with the 308 Norma, you'll be well under 80gns.

I shoot my 30-338 with 190 and 200gn bullets with 66-69gns of IMR4350. I'm guessing that with the length of that 230, that even a compressed load will still be easily less than 75gns of a given powder near the same burn rate.

I was running the 210 Bergers seated to mag length out of a 28" 300 WSM and hit 2850 using IMR 7828 with no problem.

Any of the belted mags (308 Norma, 300 Win Mag, 300 STW) can move the 230 over 2850 fps with ease.

I had great luck with the 300 WSM at mag length feeding them from Accurate Mag magazines. I think that in the WSM you would be better off with the 210-215 bullets. In the bigger cases I'd use the 230s.
