Little after work action today
«
on:
December 18, 2008, 05:27:50 PM »
I had enough time to make a quick set up before dark. I spotted three dogs together at about 1000 yards. I was using a rodent squeel and they came to 402 yards and the the big male just sat down on a hump and looked at me for 20 min. The other two were real antsy, they wanted to come in but they kept lookign back at the big one. Finaly after 20 min I decided to take a crack at him since it was about to get dark.
My question- Can you change your tpe of call after you started? Like if I was using a rodent squeel, the dogs hang up for a while, should I switch to a rabbit or woodpecker or just keep at the original call? I never know what to do. How about howl at them, would that work?Any tips for hung up dogs. They did not see me either.
Thanks

Thats a nice setup. I don't have any suggestions but good-on-ya for taking out some yotes and helping the Pheasants.
I take it your shot was wide, high, or somewhere other than intended.
Thanks for sharing.

New to calling this year but I think a hung up coyote is a great time to try new things. Not sure what I would have tried probably a challenge howl or just lip squeaks.
Looking forward to the veteran callers advice on this one.

he probably had ya dialed in. it appears he clarily sees ya, not not sure what you are and although unalarmed, suspicious. switching is ok. kinda like flyfishing, when black is off, try green, same with these dogs, especially if they hold up. i use a circe long/med jack squeal, i blow on that thing sometimes as hard as i can, trying to sound like a combination of a rabbit in a trap fighting for its life or fighting another yote, i go absolutely insane with it, varying the sounds tremendously until i cant breath, glands burst and i turn blue. just sound like the most deperate and in pain rodent in the history of the world. you can vary your pitch, and cupping and volume as you wish. when holed up like that and looking rigth at me, i have successfully used my hand as a decoy while calling. i figure if he's looking at me anyways, mightas well give him a fuzzy mossy oak glove to look at.
long winded sorry. in short, yes you can change out calls. i do it almost evry stand. i have my call, my partner has his, and we alternate.

Thanks Gearhead.
And yes the shot was high. But I dont think by much. It was a bit breezy as well. I should be able to make that shot, its the reason I bought the 22-250.

ive always thought of putting a feather on the toe of my shoe, or in a bush with a string tied to it for that exact reason... never done it, but ive thought of it!
yes, you can change your calls. if you had a digit call, i would of used a pup in destress, but looking at your pics i would of mouth sqeeked (made kissing sounds with my lips, or suck on the back of my hand..) Or like someone already said, if he has you dailed in like he does, give him something to look at... slapyour hand on the ground, thrash the bush nest to you around, fling snow around... he'll think something is attacking a rabbit or something... but yes, i change sounds when dogs arent held up at 400 yds... so you can do it, better luck next time, nice pics!!!

Like said before you can switch sounds. Some times it all that it will take to get them to start coming in again, and some times you just have to let the lead fly. If you use a decoy put it up wind of you, a few feathers will work or pretty much anything that will move around in a light breeze.

If they hang up arund the 300 or 400yd mark try using a squeeker or lipsqueek on a fairly calm day. Just cupping the call and calling lightly can work too on less calm days, They can hear a squeeker from quite a ways. I think that coyote was well "educated" and you got busted!!
Not a bad idea to change calls on the same set, if you do treat it as a new set timewise because you may be calling in a coyote from a distance that ignored your first call. Anyway my
Forgot to add, Howling when the coyote is 300 or 400yds away in open country probably won't work if they hung up, a pup distress could

If they are standing looking at you at 400 you can change sounds up and get them in..................sometimes. I have never been able to call one in thats sitting looking at me. I belive they are in there comfort zone just checking things out but have no desire to come close.
As far as switching up, absolutely. I can't count how many times I've howled some in to investigate at long distance but a cottontail, or coyote pup, or fawn gets them charging. I change sounds at every stand. Some guys say no, and thats fine but I always change up. Last year I called one in to Bighorns2bushytails and he shot it at about ten yards. I bet I used 20 different sounds on him.
I like the dogs I can see a long ways off and I just start toying with them. No two are the same but sometimes you'll get that perfect sound that gets them charging. Change um up till you find the right sound.
