i was reading NM regs today and took a swift kick in the nads when i read this

Full Fee Up Front
Anyone applying for a pronghorn, bighorn sheep, ibex, javelina or
Barbary sheep draw license, MUST pay the full license and application
fee when applying.
New Application Fees
The new nonrefundable application fees for residents is $9 and $12 for
nonresidents.

so now to put in i would have to shell out thousands of dollars up front and to add insult to injury they raised app fees too   
i have no delusion that hunting is a poor mans sport but this BS is getting out of control

i know and if i put in for all the hunts i would like to put in for my up front out of pocket is close to $20,000 before refunds

thats gonna be the new threat to the greater percentage of all hunters..Not much different then antis buying up land so it cant be hunted.wont be long before only the rich can hunt.

Will be interesting to see what that does to the odds.  They've got incredible sheep (including deserts), but the odds have been horrendous.  Fronting $3K will slow down a lot of those applicants (probably including this one).  

On another note, strange that they put javelina on that list...always think of javelina as being at the bottom of the big game list.  Also wonder why they didn't include elk and deer.  Wouldn't mind seeing a few less people apply for the elk hunts I want!

Arizona is the same way. You will be reimbursed after 6 months or so...they'll keep the interest. NM has better draw odds than AZ. Better harvest odds too!

I'll still apply for sheep and Ibex.

 Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and now New Mexico all being $$$$ upfront is starting to become expensive...........

I would assume that the 3k+ ticket price on the sheep tag will really weed out alot people especially with the tightening of credit and the poor economy

With no point structure it won't matter though, will improve the odds for sure.

This state also used to be up front money for Sheep,Goat and Moose. They also sat on it for the 6 months until the short term money matured and then returned it also less intrest. That way they know the tag is bought and didn't have to go thru the list to find an alternate. I do believe that any out of state game license that are not OTC are also up front money.

I'm OK with the upfront Money.

Cry me a river...I'd been putting in for CO Sheep, Moose, Goat (+ Deer & Elk) every year for years.  In CO you have to apply three consecutive years for Sheep just to be considered for the draw.  At full price it was a stretch because I was also applying for elk, pronghorn, deer, and goat.  Plus OR, WY, and WA tags as well.

Well Colorado thought it was a great idea to go ahead and DOUBLE the license cost on Sheep in one year.  it went from $750 to $1,500 - cash up front!!  Yes, you get it back after a couple months if you don't draw but jeeeezzzz!   It was killing me to shell out all that cash every year.  I finally quit applying for Sheep and Goat in CO.  We both lose...I won't draw a tag and they won't get my money each spring.

its getting more complicated and far more expensive to hunt out of state.you have to be a harvard lawyer to understand all of the out of state rules and regs.good thing for credit cards

i wish AZ took credit cards  its hard to convince the wife that its a good investment to part with over two grand from the savings account  at least she happy when i have to make payments on credit cards for tag fees

Why don't they just charge the amount they would make in interest for the application? I think they would be money ahead?

Id be lying if I told you guys that writing a check for my moose sheep and goat apps to Colorado Division of Wildlife for 5400 bucks was any fun... then throw on deer elk and antelope on the CC and...................

lets add another 6k for Wyoming. More cash for Arizona and 4 and half K for NM Mexico plus 2k for Idaho sheep app and 2k more for Montana.............. and good lord

That's over 20k on hunt apps....

New Mexico sheep has been $3,000 for as long as I remember. I don't see were they get off on charging that much. Except for the fact that they have desert sheep. Montana's rocky's are every bit as good as N.M. if not better.

I wish WA would go back to the old system and require the funds upfront. It would weed out a lot of the nonresidents that are not required to buy a license, just the app fees. It would make our draw odds a lot better.

If you apply online with a credit card you are charged just the application fee.  If you get drawn then they charge your credit card.  If you apply on paper you have to front the tag fee.  That is how it has been the last four or five years.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I don't think the game dept. can draw interest on your up-front fee's,I think it is a law!

I have been told that is what they do.  If it is against the law or not I don't know.
