Need help dating these Blacktail Rubs
« on: December 17, 2014, 07:28:49 PM »
Looking for some help dating these rubs. I've come into a place with a lot of sign but not real sure how to tell how old these are. These are just a few pictures and there are probably a dozen others that I can share from the area. I apologize for the poor cell phone camera quality. The close-up photo still had hair on it; the rub didn't look very fresh but I figured that it had to be new-ish given all of the rain and weather that we have been having lately? Trying to verify that these are relatively fresh so that I am not chasing a buck that is filling someones freezer right now, ha! Thanks for the help.

That's pretty fresh, at least within a month or so. It also looks like it may have been rubbed in previous years as well. Put a camera on it. Even though the rut is over you still might catch a buck coming by to check it or freshen it up.

The only reason I said weeks is because I hunt these areas religiously and this one was there for weeks after I found it ...

Dang, he really went to town on that first tree. The ones that I have found in this area look more similar to the second one (weeks old) which still gives me hope. As far as I know Im the only one that has been hunting this area for the past week from sunrise to set (figuratively). I got within 23yrds of a large doe and about 38 from a spike but decided to pass on them. All these rubs have made me crossing my fingers in hopes of coming across a nice buck (in an any deer area). If I eat my tag at least I have a nice spot for next year.

Talk sweet to them, be confident and honest, maybe some flowers and put food and drink in them in a romantic manner.

I would say that it looks just like the second photo in coloration. Thanks for sharing the photos.
