I was given a lightly used Muzzle Loader this year, After freeing the stuck breach plug and scrubbing out the corrosion and little rust pits on the firearm, I cleaned it one more time, then drenched it in a thick coat of REM-OIL and let it set overnight, I gave her a good solid wipe down and swabbed out the bore, finishing with a lightly oiled patch.

The gun in question is a .50 cal CVA Elkhorn Pro Magnum (I think thats the name) I have not yet shot it. It is only about 5 years old I guess and was only used 2 or 3 times. Due to my budget I am going to make this gun work for me for the forseable future. I had planned on buying a Traditions Vortek NW Magnum, someday.

Question 1. The muzzy I hunted this year had a percussion cap nipple on it. While it worked reliably, I found that my big fat fingers have trouble getting those little suckers on the nipple, The muzzy I was given this year has a Musket cap nipple on it, should I just buy musket caps and keep the nipple? or buy a new nipple and keep using my percussion caps?.

Question 2. If the powder I bought this year is closed tightly in the bottle and stored in my basement will it be ok for next year?

Question 3. I really enjoy shooting with a peep sight. is there a peep sight anyone could recomend for a muzzle loader.

Question 3. Where is a good place to get a couple extra nipples for the gun, What other spare parts should I consider getting and setting aside.

I'm sure some replies will give me more ideas of things I need to ask about.
Q1 Get a inline cap holder CVA makes them for both #10/11
Q2 use what you like
Q3 Always carry an extra nipple and wrench

Powder question I have pre loaded speed loads that have worked  after 5 years with out issues. I still have 6 or 7 pounds of  2FFG that I got 15 years ago and it is still goes BOOOOM no issues. Just cool dry place to store it.  :twocents:

I use the musket caps . However they make capping tools for both which is a lot easier than you fingers.

Your powder will be good for a long time. Keep dry and cool.

Williams sights

You can get spare nipple most places that sell muzzy supplies.
Extra ramrod , range rod, extra patch tip., and a patch retrieval jag.

Extra short starter too.

A small padded rifle vise is a good thing to have in camp on hunts. Lot easier removing the breech plug for cleaning and other mait
