Changing rifle calibers. Gunsmith work...
« on: January 12, 2009, 02:42:42 PM »
I'm wanting to make a 6mm x 45. All it is a 223 necked up to a 6mm. You just use your 243 resizing die on 223 brass.

If I take a 223 to a gun smith what will it take for him to change the barrel on it to 6mm but still use the 223s action? Is it pretty basic?
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

you may be able to have your barrel rebored and chamber reamed to proper neck size.

Or you could just order a new barrel chambered for the 6x45mm round.

That is just a basic re-bore and should be right around $150  bucks.  A new barrel will be the cost of the barrel, plus another 50 to swap it over if it is ready to go.  Otherwise the barrel plus $250.00 to bore, thread, crown, and swap over.  That round should be a little easier on brass then the 7mm TCU.  You may have aneal military brass but factory should be fine.  Military gets a little brittle and will split when upsizing.  Sounds like a neat little round.  Though legal I would guess you will be in the 2200fps range with a 100gr bullet.

I had my Rem 600 Rebarrelled to 6x45mm (6mm-223)awhile back.  Pac-Nor did the work, total came to about $500 with the action trued and  lugs lapped.  They did great work.

No one will rebore a barrel, it is more expensive to do.  The guns smith will simply get a 6mm barrel, chamber it for what you want it is cheaper and faster and install into your gun.
Progressives are coming for your guns.
What are you going to do?

Well me, I do not have any guns, gave away or sold them 15 years ago.

Rebore Only

We rebore your rifle barrel to a larger caliber of your choice.  All chambering work is performed by you or your gunsmith.  This service DOES NOT include re-marking the caliber designation or recutting the crown.  Send your barrel only.

Price...$225.00

Rebore with Neck and Throat

We rebore your rifle barrel to a larger caliber of your choice and then cut a new neck and throat into the chamber.  This allows you to step up in caliber while staying within a family of cartridges.  A common example is converting a .30-06 Springfield to a .35 Whelan.  This service includes a new muzzle crown and re-marking the caliber designation.  We require that you send the complete firearm so we can accurately headspace and test fire it.

Price...$350.00

Rebore with Rechamber

We rebore your rifle barrel to a larger caliber of your choice and then cut a new chamber.  An example is converting a .22-250 Remington to a .308 Winchester.  This service includes a new muzzle crown and re-marking the caliber designation.  We require that you send the complete firearm so we can accurately headspace and test fire it.

Price...$425.00

PLEASE NOTE:  The prices quoted above are for rifle barrels up to 26 inches in length.  Add $5.00 per inch over 26 inches up to 30 inches maximum.  There is an additional charge of $10.00 to rebore to calibers over .375.

Check with these guy's they do excellent work(I've been told), under $300 complete.

http://www.cutrifle.com/reboring.html

I had my old Rem 721 Rebored to 35 Whelen a number of years ago in Eatonville, great job, I got to spend the day with the gunsmith as he did the job.  It was a real learning experience.  The smith is no longer doing any work.

I'll post some others sources as I find them.

AWS

http://www.deltagunshop.com/Clearwater/CW_main.html   Cliff Labounty's old equipment and trained by him great recomendations.

High Plains Reboring  PH# 701 448 9188 I've talked to him but have not seen any of his work.

ER Shaw does some nice work and is very reasonable.  They are new barrels and rebarrel in shop.  I put one of their 6x47mm barrels on one of my Savages and it is a nice barrel.  They retooled a few years back and are building some really nice barrels now.

That's where the above prices came from. I used to live near Cliff... and he was a great guy and an awesome 'smith. I'm pretty certain he left all his knowledge and equipment in good hands.

I guess someone still do this kind of work.  For $425 ++ for Stainless steel.  For that price I will buy a new gun it's cheaper plus I have two guns.

Midway USA sells Adams and Bennett 6mm barrel blanks F34 contour 26" Chrome molly in the white for $79.99
Here is a gun smith in Oregon that does a great job.  http://www.skaggsgunsmithing.com/
He has done a couple jobs for me.  He can probably do yours for $75 that's chambered, crowned, installed and test fired to your action + shipping back and forth.. Total under $200. but you have to blue it yourself.

High Plains Reboring and Rerifling, 243 14th Ave. NW, Turtle Lake, ND. 58575         Norm Johnson, owner.  701-448-9188 e-mail: nrjonsn@westriv.com

He is a straight shooter with you. Reboring I think is cheaper that rebarreling sometimes. This guy does all kinds of gunsmithy work and is a shooter himself too.

I am looking at having a 1956 Remington 760 pump in .244 Rem (1 in 12 twist) redbored to .257 Roberts for better on deer and still good for larger varmints.
