Funny you said that because I worked really hard to get that light.  On the first shot, he was bedded in shadows in trees but I saw a sun spot to his left.  I waited 20 minutes for the sun to drop and that sun spot to hit him.  I figured he would get back up and bed in the shade so I shot really fast once the sun illuminated him fully.  The second was shot in first hour daylight and I worked hard to hike the hill to stay ahead of him and have the shadows on the opposite side but he skirted me.  The rest were shot in low setting sunset light.  I love this time of year because the sun is so low even if it's mid day you can get away with decent images.  Thanks all!

I actually love the new 7D Mark 2.  Unlike the old 7D, you can use it at ISO 800 as the grain structure is less and smaller allowing for easy cleanup of images.  There is a ton of reach with the 1.6x crop factor that I like instead of using a 1.4x with my 5D3.  The shutter is very quiet compared to the 5D3 and this is a huge plus.  I don't know how they made the shutter so quiet even when shooting at 10 FPS.  In silent mode, it shoots 5 FPS and is about the same loudness as the 5D3 in silent mode.  You can really rip off frames with it and it doesn't bog down at all with your Lexar 1000x or faster cards.  It clears the buffer nicely.  My only complaint was battery life.  It doesn't seem to last quite as long as a 5D3 would.  However, it does have GPS and I used it with that quite a bit.  Getting the vertical grip and 2 batteries is in my future plans.  The new higher capacity battery is the same one used on all cameras lately and is interchangeable with the older style battery in my 5D3.  The only difference is the new batteries carry a tad more capacity.  They all use the same charger so having 2 chargers is nice.  The screen is excellent and very very bright.  I had to turn it down because it was so bright I found myself overexposing images.  I would see them on the screen and the exposure looked good but when I got them on a computer, they were about 1/2 stop underexposed.  I turned down the screen brightness on the camera and that solved that. 

GPS is wierd.  Even if you turn the camera off, it stays on.  Not sure why.  You actually have to go into the menus and turn off GPS before turning your camera off.  Otherwise, I would imagine this camera will hunt for GPS while it's in your bag or when your not using it and run through batteries...?

It's really going to be a useful photography tool and a better overall wildlife camera for most people than the 5D3/5D2.  The 5D3 is better for landscapes, however, as it has the full frame sensor.  With both cameras, you really have a lot of focal length options if you have a set of lenses.  This 7D2 with the new 100-400 L II is going to be a GREAT backpacking wildlife package.  Can't wait! 

Did I miss anything?  I tried it out at ISO 1600 a few times but haven't processed any of those images so I can't tell you if you can get away with ISO 1600.  I could on the 5D3 so we'll see...

 Yeah yeah, I know you said "new" but that's still pretty funny, are you sure you were not referring to the Canon 200-400?

The new 100-400 is supposed to be really sharp according to MTF charts.  It also has real 4 stop IS unlike the archaic crap in the old one.  They did away with the push pull design also.  The 200-400 would be nice but I can't carry all big lenses.  I need a light backpack lens and the new 100-400 is much much better than the old one.  Likewise, the new 7D is better than the old making it useful.

Do the AF points illuminate black like the Mark I? Or are they finally red? I couldn't stand that on the Mark I.

Just curious, how far away were you and with what lens did you take those shots? 

I'm looking at getting my first DSLR.  I'm thinking about getting a cheap used cannon like the T3 but splurging on maybe two good lenses or getting a used original 5D and getting some cheaper lenses.

I'm leaning towards getting two good lenses, that way I can upgrade to a full-frame camera later. 

And thanks a bunch for the write-up you did a while back on Canon Lenses!  It's been quite useful!
