your fav fish?
« on: December 21, 2008, 10:25:51 AM »
What is your fav fish to catch? for me its hands down oversize sturgeon! Ive been lucky to fish alot of places for alot of great fish... alaska on the nush for kings, and other rivers for world class rainbows on a fly.... california for huge stripers and largemouth.. my biggest is 14 lbs.. but of all the fish I have ever hooked into nothing is quite like a oversize sturgeon! the way they bite, how the hook set feels, the way they jump! the size!! all of it is as good as it gets for freshwater! not even winter/summer steelhead come close to me.. if you dont feel like death after the battle it wasnta  good enough fight IMO... and the big boys work you over and over!!  how about you guys? whats your fav fish to hook into?

I got to say fishing the tiny creek near my house for little brook trout is my favorite.

My favorite "big" fish would be halibut.  My biggest is right at 200 lbs.  My favorite all around fish is king salmon in the salt or fresh from it.  I landed a 60 lber in the Humptulips a few years back that still had lice on it and drug me up and down the river for quite a while.

Yeah, I've seen some of those sturgeon, they are prehistoric monsters!  The biggest fish
I've ever caught is a 38" steely on the N. fork of the Washougal.

I love floating down a river, usually the lower yakima, in the summer in either a float tube or my jet sled.  The smallmouth fishing is crazy.  Top water, cranks, plastics, they hit them all.  And the way smallmouth hit and fight.  I love it.  But there is something to be said for having a pole in your hand and working the bottom with a shrimp spinner for springers.  Hanging onto the rod when they hit is a real kick in the pants
"I think I have a fish"
"probably bottom"
"bottom doesn't head shake!"

My favorite fish to catch is a Chum.  They'll tear you up on light/medium gear.  My favorite fish to eat is sockeye.  I have also caught large Sturgeon, they are very impressive also.

Small Mouth Bass all the way...especially river caught, a float trip down the John Day River is pretty close to heaven.

I haven't done it in a long time but trolling for salmon with my dad were the best fishing trips ever.  Lately it's been fishing in the ponds with my son, I never freshwater fished as a kid so its kinda new to me.  I never seem to catch much but its still fun.
