Places to sight-in rifle around Woodland
« on: December 13, 2014, 05:49:22 PM »
Hi everyone,
Just moved to the Vancouver area from MD.  I am excited to start hunting out here.  Being new I have no idea where I can go to sight in a rifle or hunt in general.  I keep reading posts and threads and still can't wrap my head around where I can actually go to do both.  I dont want to plink in hunting areas and all I have found is Wolverton in Ariel, seems expensive to range shoot a few times a year.  I would be happy to buy anybody a cup of coffee or breakfast to make a new buddy and teach me about the area.

Welcome to Washington. Hopefully you have got a map of the 564 to help show you public and private land. I don't know woodland to well, but have been up in the hills around there bowhunting. Can't think of the road name, but it's just past the boat ramp for the lewis river east of woodland. The road goes north toward the little kalama river. Follow the road up to the top to the 4 way stop. Hang a right and that will take you through some state land and timber company property. That area will keep you out of the 564 which is open for late archery. Several areas there to site in, just pick up your brass. Not a bad area to elk hunt during the season too.

Look up the English pit in Vancouver. It's a gun range, I have been to it a few times.

I live in woodland.  Just head up hwy towards Ariel.  Take left on Fredrickson.  Follow all the way to end. You will hit gravel. Follow gravel to a y intersection hang a left and follow for mile or so. Can site your rifle in there. Then head up mt from there.

There are a couple places you can try.

If you want a range to shoot at, Clark Rifles in Brush Prairie has ranges out to 300 yards and is open to the public on Sunday.

There is also lots of DNR land around you. As long as you follow the signs and don't shoot in a no-shooting zone, there's plenty of places to go. Its a bit north, but if you head to Castle Rock, cross the river to Westside Hwy, go north to Casey Road and follow it up to the power line corridor, there are several places up there you could shoot out to 200 yards or more. Just please be respectful and clean up after yourself so we don't lose more public lands to shooting.
