I have the videos as well but nothing to play them on.  Yeah, the "tang" thing always got me as well.  If I remember right they followed Popeye right up to within a month or so before he disappeared and assumed that he died of old age but never found him.  Those shows where they tracked bucks for over 200 miles and those monsters that came out of Montrose were classics!

Kirt Darner sure proved there were big bucks around Montrose.

I found the Colorado canyons from his book, bought the tag, and actually went and hunted those spots.    Guess what - they still hold big bucks!   Unfortunately, the only reason that I know is by the abundance of large shed antlers laying around.    :chuckle:

Didn't he turn out to be a liar?

I have one of the extreme bucks videos Morty and popeye were great bucks. My dad hunted the area popeye was in. He said there were even planes looking for him. 2 guys got on popeye and another buck. Both shot at the same time and popeye got away and the smaller buck got shot. I believe it scored around 195. Not sure if they were guided or not. From what my dad understood popeye was being closely watched by game wardens or biologists in the wintering ground and he died not long after shedding in I think '98.

I can't really prove any of that but that's the story I've been told over the years... Thought I'd share.

The faux rustic sign that decorates the front porch at Kirt Darner's ranch house is an obvious joke, placed under an antler porch light and within sight of an outbuilding jammed with hunting gear and legions of glassy-eyed mounted animal heads.

But the joke is over. Kirt Darner, a once legendary hunter and outfitter, is now branded a felon who broke the rules, not the records. As bloggers on hunting websites put it, he has dropped from the penthouse to the outhouse. He can never hunt, fish or own a firearm again.

Darner, 69, pleaded guilty last month in New Mexico to illegally transporting wild elk and receiving stolen bighorn sheep heads — charges that cap what appears to be a series of lies and cheating that span at least 30 years, driven by a passion to claim more records and more trophy heads than anyone else.
